PHILADELPHIA -- The Phillies' bullpen needs to build a better bridge from the starting rotation to closer Jhoan Duran before Opening Day 2027.

They are bringing back one of their most reliable bullpen arms from this past season. Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski announced on Thursday that they had re-signed left-hander Tim Mayza to a one-year contract. The Phillies officially announced the contract on Friday.

Mayza, 34, posted a 3.48 ERA in 60 appearances in 2026, throwing a career-high 67 1/3 innings. He had a 3.72 ERA in six games as an opener and ranked second among Phillies relievers with 1.5 WAR, according to Baseball Reference. Only Duran (3.4) was better. Mayza ranked 15th among lefty relievers.

Mayza grew up a Phillies fan, attending Upper Perkiomen High School in Pennsburg, Pa., and graduating from Millersville University in 2018. The Phillies claimed Mayza off waivers from Pittsburgh on Aug. 31, 2025. He came to Spring Training as a non-roster invitee, but made the Opening Day roster.
