Wednesday's top prospect performers

Here's a look at Wednesday's top Minor League performers from each team's Top 30 Prospects list:

AMERICAN LEAGUE EAST

Blue Jays: Griffin Conine, OF (No. 16) -- 1-for-4, HR, 2 RBI, 2 BB (Class A Lansing)
While the Blue Jays now have their three legacy players together in the Major Leagues with Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Cavan Biggio and Bo Bichette, the next in line continues to put up numbers in Class A. Conine's 15th home run gives him two in his last three games. Another two strikeouts give Conine 85 in his 51 games with the Lugnuts this season, but he's certainly rediscovered his power stroke from his NCAA days with Duke and, as long as those strikeouts don't get in the way, he should climb the ladder quickly as one of the system's top hitters. Orioles: Alex Wells, LHP (No. 20) -- 7 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K (Double-A Bowie)
Wells cruised through most of his start on Wednesday night with Bowie before allowing four hits in the seventh inning, but he managed to escape with just one run crossing the plate. The lefty continues to show off his excellent control of the strike zone with his lone walk being his first since July 1. Wells doesn't push his fastball past 90 mph very often, but the 22-year-old mixes his changeup and curveball well to keep hitters off balance and limit hard contact. Rays: Greg Jones, SS (No. 9) -- 2-for-2, 3B (Class A Short-Season Hudson Valley)
That's back-to-back multihit performances for Jones, who is off to a fast start in his career since the Rays grabbed him in the first round of this year's Draft. The UNC Wilmington product has hits in 24 of the 31 games he's played and is hitting .341 early in his career. Jones, a switch-hitter, has average power, but does possess top-of-the-scale speed and has already swiped 13 bags. Rays prospects stats »

Red Sox: C.J. Chatham, (No. 10) -- 3-for-5, 2B, 3B, RBI (Double-A Portland)
Chatham was just a home run shy of the cycle on Wednesday for Portland, but the power stroke isn't part of his game. This bumped his average up to .302, though, after eight hits over his last four games. This was actually Chatham's first triple of the season, but his knack for producing line-drive contact made this his 23rd double of the season, already a career high in just his 80th game. Yankees: Canaan Smith, OF (No. 26) -- 3-for-5, 3B, HR, 2 RBI, SB (Class A Charleston)
The breakout season continues for Smith, and Wednesday's performance surely came with a sigh of relief for the young outfielder after he hit his first home run since June 13. He's still hit for contact and reached base at a very high rate since then, though, so the return of a little pop would be welcome news. AMERICAN LEAGUE CENTRAL

Indians: Daniel Johnson, OF (No. 16) -- 3-for-4, 2 2B, HR, RBI, BB (Triple-A Columbus)
Johnson did it all at the plate for Triple-A Columbus, where he's continued his success from earlier this season with Double-A Akron. His 16 home runs have Johnson on pace to take a run at his career high of 22, set in 2017. This was just the second home run that Johnson hit in July, though, so he'll need to recreate a month like he had in May, where he launched eight home runs between the two levels. Royals: John Rave, OF (No. 22) -- 2-4, BB (Class A Lexington)
Rave put up two hits for Lexington and drew a walk, something he's done plenty of since making his pro debut (21 in 34 games). The fifth-round pick from the 2019 Draft seems to be settling in lately with four multi-hit games over his last five, which has raised his OPS to .697. Royals prospects stats »

Tigers: Tarik Skubal, LHP (No. 4) -- 4 2/3 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 6 BB, 10 K (Double-A Erie)
Skubal certainly brought his strikeout pitch to Double-A with him as this outing gave him four double-digit strikeout totals in five starts at the level and a whopping 50 K's over 24 innings. The odd wrinkle to this start, though, was Skubal's six walks, which doubled his season high and quickly ran his pitch count up to 98. That seems to be an outlier for Skubal, but the zero earned runs and 10 strikeouts are becoming the norm for one of the most exciting young arms in the Tigers' organization. Tigers prospects stats »

Twins: Ryan Jeffers, C (No. 10) -- 2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI (Double-A Pensacola)
Jeffers is making good on his recent promotion to Double-A Pensacola with two home runs in his last three games. The 6-foot-4, 230-pound catcher is built for power and earns positive reviews for his makeup, which has helped him reach this level already as a 2018 draftee.Twins prospects stats »

White Sox: Luis Robert, CF (No. 1, MLB No. 5) -- 1-for-4, HR, RBI, BB (Triple-A Charlotte)
After proving that Class A Advanced and Double-A couldn't hold him, Robert is rolling with Triple-A Charlotte. Robert quickly launched five home runs when he arrived in Charlotte -- including a couple of two-homer games -- but this was his first homer since July 18. For any other player, that's not a noticeable gap, but Robert's 22 home runs and 1.042 OPS across three levels this season have raised the bar. White Sox prospects stats »

AMERICAN LEAGUE WEST

A’s: Logan Davidson, SS (No. 7) -- 2-for-3, HR, RBI, 2 BB (Class A Short-Season Vermont)
Oakland's first-round pick in this year's Draft, 29th overall, seems to be shaking off the slow start to his professional career. Over his first 23 games, Davidson hit just .143 with one extra-base hit. Something has clicked over these last four games, though, as the 21-year-old Clemson product has five hits, including two home runs, and four walks. A's prospects stats »

Angels: Jo Adell, OF (No. 1, MLB No. 4) -- 1-for-1, HR, RBI, BB (Double-A Mobile)
Adell was a one-hit wonder on Wednesday, and that's all he needed. Baseball's No. 4 prospect entered the game as a defensive replacement in the sixth inning after getting a scheduled night off and wasted no time at the plate, launching his 10th home run of the season in the bottom half of the frame before walking later in the game. Astros: Grae Kessinger, SS (No. 13) -- 2-for-3, BB (Class A Quad Cities)
Kessinger, the Astros' second-round pick in this year's Draft, posted his second two-hit game in as many days. Kessinger hasn't tapped into his power just yet with only one home run over his first 34 games, but the Astros are optimistic that they can help Kessinger expand that part of his game in pro ball. Mariners: Jake Fraley, OF (No. 8) -- 3-for-4, 2 2B, 2 RBI (Triple-A Tacoma)
Fraley was in a rare cold patch entering play on Wednesday, with a .158 average and .456 OPS over his last ten games with Triple-A Tacoma. A big game is never far off for a bat like Fraley's, though, and he came through with a pair of doubles and two RBI. Fraley's hit tool and ability to reach base were his calling cards entering this season, with a projection as a potential top-of-the-order bat, but his power has also showed up in 2019. His 16 home runs and 22 doubles are both career highs with plenty of time to build on them. Mariners prospects stats »

Rangers: Bubba Thompson, OF (No. 8) -- 3-for-4, 2B (Class A Advanced Down East)
Thompson's season got off to a rough start as he hit just .150 over the first 12 games, then missed the next two months while on the injured list. Although the 21-year-old hasn't lit the world on fire in his return, he's certainly starting to perform better. Thompson is hitting .286 in the 13 games since his arrival and is starting to show more of the five-tool potential that led to the Rangers drafting him 26th overall in 2017. NATIONAL LEAGUE EAST

Braves: Kyle Wright, RHP (No. 4, MLB No. 38) -- 7 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 8 K (Triple-A Gwinnett)
Wright looked sharp again in his second start back in Triple-A after his second stint in the Major Leagues this season. The main differentiating factors between the Majors and Minors for Wright this season has been his control, but he allowed just two walks on Wednesday and has allowed four hits or fewer in each of his last eight Triple-A starts. Wright also tied his season high pitch count at 102, which he also did back on July 12. This outing brings Wright's ERA back down to 4.54 after it climbed above seven at a couple points in June. Marlins: Edward Cabrera, RHP (No. 7) -- 6 2/3 IP, 6 H, 1 R (0 ER), 2 BB, 6 K (Double-A Jacksonville)
Cabrera has carried over his excellent start with Class A Advanced Jupiter to the Jumbo Shrimp, where he now owns a 2.60 ERA after his first six starts. The home run ball was giving Cabrera some trouble after the promotion with five over his first five starts, but he kept the ball in the park on Wednesday and limited his walks once again. As long as Cabrera is around the strike zone, he'll be able to maximize the value of his excellent fastball, which reaches into the high-90s and earned a 70 grade on the 20-to-80 scale. Mets: Andres Gimenez, SS (No. 3, No. 94) -- 2-for-2, 2B, HR, RBI (Double-A Binghamton); Kevin Smith, LHP (No. 11) -- 6 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K (Double-A Binghamton)
Gimenez went 0-for-3 in the second half of Binghamton's doubleheader, but helped contribute to a win in the first game. He hit his sixth homer of the year off Casey Mize, the top-ranked pitching prospect in baseball, as part of a multihit effort. The 20-year-old, whom the Mets signed in 2015, is scuffling a bit at the plate this season and hitting .247 after hitting .281 a season ago. Smith, a seventh-round pick from the 2018 Draft, also came up big in the Game 1 win. The 22-year-old threw 56 of his 92 pitches for strikes as he spun his fourth scoreless start of the year and picked up his seventh win. Smith began the year with Class A Advanced St. Lucie, but was bumped up to Binghamton recently and has been dominant, pitching to a 1.56 ERA through three starts (17 1/3 innings). Phillies: Bryson Stott, SS (No. 3) -- 1-for-4, 2B, RBI (Class A Short-Season Williamsport)
Stott is hitting .192 through 15 games with the Crosscutters, but did manage to snap his 12 at-bat hitless streak with an RBI double in the fifth inning. The 2019 first-round Draft pick reminds some evaluators of Brandon Crawford and has the chance to develop into a plus hitter. Phillies prospects stats »

Nationals: Drew Mendoza, 3B (No. 7) -- 4-for-5, 2 RBI (Class A Hagerstown)
Mendoza extended his hitting streak to five games and bumped his average up to .313 with the first four-hit game of his career. The 94th overall (third round) pick from the 2019 Draft is off to a strong start in his professional career after hitting .298 over 160 games with Florida State. The 21-year-old has some swing and miss to his game, but also possesses plenty of raw power. Nationals prospects stats »

NATIONAL LEAGUE CENTRAL

Brewers: Tyrone Taylor, OF (No. 27) -- 2-for-4, 2B (Triple-A San Antonio)
Taylor, the 2012 second-rounder, is now in his eighth season in the Minor Leagues and his second at the Triple-A level after a successful first lap in 2018. His numbers have dipped a bit in 2019 and he lost a month to injury, but there's still time for Taylor to recapture some of his form from last season, when he made a swing adjustment that resulted in more consistent hard contact through the air. Cubs: Brailyn Marquez, LHP (No. 4) -- 6 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, BB, 8 K (Class A South Bend)
Marquez tossed six no-hit innings, which builds upon his incredible 14-strikeout performance on July 25 against Lake County. The no-hit bid died soon after the bullpen took over for Marquez, but it's also important that the young lefty walked just one batter after walking three or more in half of his starts this season entering Wednesday. Those control issues are new for Marquez in 2019 after posting impressive walk rates earlier in his career. Now at 77 1/3 innings, Marquez is showing no signs of slowing down as he continues to build on his career-high workload. Cubs prospects stats »

Cardinals: Edmundo Sosa, SS/2B/3B (No. 16) -- 4-for-4, 2 RBI (Triple-A Memphis)
Sosa was a perfect 4-for-4 on Wednesday, all singles, which raised his average for the season to .271. Singles were more common for Sosa earlier in his career and, while he'll certainly take four in a game, he's also added more power to his stroke over the last two seasons thanks to the addition of a leg kick and some improved swing mechanics. Sosa now has 12 home runs, already matching his total from 2018, and offers the defensively versatility to play around the infield. Cardinals prospects stats »

Pirates: Kevin Kramer, 2B/3B/OF (No. 9) -- 2-for-4, HR, RBI, BB (Triple-A Indianapolis)
Kramer hasn't matched his 2018 numbers in Triple-A, but he's recently shown signs that he's heating up at the plate. The 25-year-old has four home runs over his last seven games, which accounts for nearly half of his nine home runs this season. Kramer left the yard 15 times in 2018, his career high, and he could take a surprise run at that number through August if this stretch continues. Pirates prospects stats »

Reds: Michael Siani, OF (No. 8) -- 3-for-4, 3B, SB (Class A Dayton)
With a triple and his 32nd stolen base of the 2019 season, Siani's speed was on full display. The 20-year-old's physical maturation will play a role in determining just how far his power comes along but, for now, the 2018 high school Draft pick is holding his own in Class A while flashing his upside like he did on Wednesday. Next up for Siani in his first full season of professional ball is a run at the 40-steal plateau. With a .338 on-base percentage and plenty of growth ahead, he'll have a shot. Reds prospects stats »

NATIONAL LEAGUE WEST

D-backs: Alek Thomas, OF (No. 1, MLB No. 63) -- 3-for-4, 2B (Class A Kane County)
Make that back-to-back three-hit performances for Thomas, who took over the No. 1 spot in the D-backs' farm system after Jazz Chisholm was traded to the Marlins. Thomas, a second-round pick from the 2018 Draft, is hitting .306 through the first 89 games of his full-season debut and has really turned it on of late, hitting .333 in the second half and .352 in July. Dodgers: Gavin Lux, SS/2B (No. 1, No. 10 in MLB) -- 1-for-4, RBI (Triple-A Oklahoma City)
Just one hit almost feels like a disappointment with the way Lux has been swinging the bat lately. The 21-year-old, who is hitting .457 since being promoted to Triple-A, has hits in eight straight games and has also reached base in 38 straight contests. Lux, a 2016 first-round pick, hit .313 through 64 games with Double-A Tulsa prior to his promotion and has also broke out for a career-best 21 homers so far this season. Dodgers prospects stats »

Giants: Alexander Canario, OF (No. 7) -- 3-for-4, HR, 2 RBI (Class A Short-Season Salem-Keizer)
Homers are starting to become the norm for Canario, who has gone deep in two of the past three games and 10 times over 35 games this season. The 19-year-old, whom the Giants signed in 2016, has shown plenty of power this year and is also hitting .294. While his numbers have been impressive this season, Canario's swing can get long at times and he doesn't make consistent contact. Giants prospects stats »

Padres: Luis Patino, RHP (No. 4, No. 33 in MLB) -- 8.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 9 K (Class A Advanced Lake Elsinore)
It's hard to much more efficient and dominant than Patino was on Wednesday. The 19-year-old carved his way through the San Jose lineup, needing just 94 pitches (72 strikes) to spin the longest start of his career. Patino, who carried a perfect-game bid into the sixth inning, threw 6 1/3 scoreless innings in his last start and has now yielded just one earned run over his past 20 1/3 frames. Signed out of Colombia in 2016, Patino, who has feel for and command of four pitches, has pitched to a 2.63 ERA and struck out 95 through 82 innings this season. Padres prospects stats »

Rockies: Josh Fuentes, 3B/1B (No. 13) -- 2-for-4, HR, 3 RBI (Triple-A Albuquerque)
Fuentes has now homered in back-to-back games, bringing his season total to 14, one shy of his career high. The 26-year-old is known as being Nolan Arenado's cousin, but he's certainly working hard to make a name for himself. Fuentes has done nothing but hit since signing with the Rockies in 2014. The Missouri Baptist product is hitting .266 through 70 games this season, but has hit over .300 in each of the past three seasons. Rockies prospects stats »
