The Athletics claimed outfielder Trayce Thompson off waivers from the Yankees on Thursday. Oakland then transferred right-hander Paul Blackburn to the 60-day disabled list to create room on the 40-man roster for Thompson.
Thompson is expected to join the A's in Anaheim when they take on the Angels this weekend, manager Bob Melvin said.
The 27-year-old spent Spring Training with the Dodgers and batted .255 with a homer and two RBIs in 20 games before being designated for assignment on March 27. The Yankees claimed him off waivers on Tuesday.
The brother of Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson, Trayce is a career .233 hitter with 19 homers and 50 RBIs in 151 games over parts of three Major League seasons.
Blackburn went 0-3 with a 6.75 ERA in six appearances (three starts) for Oakland in Spring Training before straining his right forearm. He went 3-1 with a 3.22 ERA in 10 starts with the A's last season.
