Mancini fills bill as Davis fights stomach bug

ST. PETERSBURG -- With first baseman Chris Davis out for a second straight game due to an illness, Trey Mancini was a worthy substitute.
The rookie turned in a Davis-esque offensive performance with two hits, a home run and a walk in the Orioles' 5-4 loss to the Rays on Tuesday night.
With the O's railing 5-1 in the sixth, Mancini turned on Jake Faria's fastball on the inner half of the plate, sending it into the left-field bleachers. The ball had an exit velocity of 108 mph and traveled a projected 370 feet, according to Statcast™.
Two innings later, Mancini walked and later scored on Welington Castillo's two-run single that made it a one-run game. Mancini also made a nice catch on a popup near the railing of the Rays' dugout on the first-base side.

Mancini's homer was just his second in the last month. He started the season pumping out home runs with regularity, with 14 in his first 61 games. Those 14 home runs before the All-Star break set an Orioles rookie record. He hit .340 or better in both May and June, but his July average has slipped to .278.
As was the case in Monday's series opener, Davis was held out of the starting lineup by a viral stomach illness.
"Chris is still weak," manager Buck Showalter said. "A lot better today. Hopefully, he'll be able to start tomorrow. He lost a lot of fluids."
Showalter added the club believes Davis is no longer contagious. The first baseman left the ballpark on Monday before batting practice.
Davis missed 26 games while on the disabled list due to a right oblique injury from June to July. He is 6-for-37 (.162) in 10 games since returning, with three home runs and nine RBIs. He has 17 homers and 35 RBIs overall in 71 games.
