Twins' top pick Lackey gets some big firsts out of the way in Single-A

A player's journey to the Majors usually begins with a series of firsts. First pro game. First pro hit. First pro RBI. First pro defensive highlight. Vahn Lackey, the Twins' top pick in this summer's MLB Draft, now has all those behind him.
The No. 3 overall pick last month recorded the first two hits and first RBI of his career on Saturday, his third game with Single-A Fort Myers. The catcher and Georgia Tech product also threw out his first two runners on the bases, giving him quite a productive introduction to pro ball.

Lackey's performance on Saturday helped Fort Myers to an 8-7 win in 10 innings against Palm Beach at Lee Health Sports Complex. It figures to be the first of many such games for Lackey, who won the 2026 Johnny Bench Award, given to the best college catcher in the nation, and also received the third-largest signing bonus in Draft history ($9,497,500).
With all those firsts out of the way, Lackey's journey to the bigs begins in earnest.
