Washington Nationals recall Andrew Alvarez

The Washington Nationals recalled left-handed pitcher Andrew Alvarez from Triple-A Rochester on Friday and optioned right-handed pitcher Zak Kent to Triple-A Rochester on Thursday. Nationals President of Baseball Operations Paul Toboni made the announcements.

Alvarez, 26, returns for his second Major League stint of the season. He was recalled on April 19 and tossed 4.1 innings of four-hit shutout ball with five strikeouts and no walks in Washington’s 3-0 win over the San Francisco Giants. Alvarez is 2-1 with a 1.95 ERA, 25 strikeouts, a .194 opponents’ average and a 1.08 WHIP in six career Major League games (5 GS) since his big league debut on Sept. 1, 2025.

Washington’s 2023 Minor League Pitcher of the Year, Alvarez is tied for first among Nationals Minor Leaguers with 45 strikeouts in seven outings (34.0 IP) with Triple-A Rochester. His 11.9 strikeouts per 9.0 innings leads the system and ranks third in the International League. Alvarez is 2-1 with a 5.29 ERA for the Red Wings in 2026.

Alvarez went 1-1 with a 2.31 ERA in five games (five starts) during his rookie season of 2025. He pitched to a 1.15 ERA (2 ER/15.2 IP) in his first three career starts. He ranked second in Washington's system (4th in all of Triple-A) with 123.0 innings and third in the organization (10th in Triple-A) with 114 strikeouts at the time of his Major League debut on Sept. 1 vs. Miami.
