Washington Nationals select the contract of Tom Cosgrove

The Washington Nationals selected the contract of left-handed pitcher Tom Cosgrove and transferred right-handed pitcher Jake Irvin to the 60-day Injured List on Friday. Right-handed pitcher Brad Lord was placed on the 15-Day Injured List (retroactive to July 6) with left side tightness on Thursday. Nationals President of Baseball Operations Paul Toboni made the announcements.

Cosgrove, 30, joins the Nationals after he struck out the side in his only inning with Triple-A Rochester this season on July 5 against Lehigh Valley. Cosgrove was 2-1 with a 4.30 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 29.1 innings of work with Triple-A Sugar Land in the Houston Astros organization before he was acquired by the Nationals in exchange for cash on July 3. He held opposing hitters to a .206 average (21-for-106) and worked 22 scoreless outings in those 29 appearances with the Space Cowboys.

The 6-foot-2, 190-pound lefty has pitched in parts of three Major League seasons with the San Diego Padres (2023-24) and Chicago Cubs (2025). In 2023, Cosgrove pitched to a 1.75 ERA (10 ER/51.1 IP), the ninth-lowest ERA among relievers and third lowest among lefty bullpen arms in Major League Baseball. In all, he’s 1-3 with a 3.86 ERA and 62 strikeouts in 74 Major League games (70.0 IP).

A native of Staten Island, N.Y., Cosgrove was originally selected by the Padres in the 12th round of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft out of Manhattan College.
