Shields set to return from DL on Sunday

CHICAGO -- James Shields, on the disabled list since April 21, will return to the White Sox starting rotation on Sunday in Toronto.
The veteran right-hander is expected to be activated from his first stint on the disabled list Sunday. It will be his first start since sustaining a strained right lat on April 16. Shields, who threw 90 pitches in his final rehab start with Triple-A Charlotte on Tuesday, said he will have no innings or pitch limit on Sunday.
"I got up to 90 pitches down there in my last start, progressed pretty well," Shields said. "I feel pretty good. I'm ready to go. I felt good for the most part, and I'm ready to rock."
Shields got off to a solid start this season, posting a 1.62 ERA in three starts after a 6-19 record in 2016. Shields said he had a good feel for his stuff during his three rehab outings, and his arm strength is good to go for a full-fledged return.
"My very first game, I feel I started off right where I left off. Obviously, it's a work in progress. I'm still getting my arm back in shape. I feel like it's pretty good right now. I feel pretty solid to go," he said.

Shields' first career DL stint saw him return to a place he hadn't been in 12 years -- riding the buses of Minor League life.
"I was a road warrior for the Charlotte Knights there for a little bit," he said. "I got one bus ride in. It brought back a few memories. I think it's been 11 or 12 years since I've been in the Minor Leagues, so it was pretty interesting."
With Shields' return, the White Sox are expected to move left-hander David Holmberg back to the bullpen. Holmberg is scheduled to start Thursday's series finale against the Orioles, but was not listed in the future rotation for Chicago's trips to Toronto or Minnesota.

• White Sox right fielder Avisaíl García should be good to go despite being hit by a pitch on his left elbow during the sixth inning of Tuesday's over the Orioles, and was listed in the starting lineup Wednesday. White Sox manager Rick Renteria said Garcia will undergo his usual routine and will be ready to play, barring any setbacks.
• Renteria received a delayed celebration for his 100th career win as a manager Tuesday, shortly after his 101st career win when the White Sox topped the Orioles. The team gave Renteria a brief beer shower, which Renteria said caught him by surprise.
"Yeah, it did, I appreciated it," Renteria said. "I wasn't thinking about it. Honestly, I wasn't aware of it. I was taken aback a little bit. I was pleasantly surprised by their interest in it. So they gave me their bath. It was interesting. It was fun."
