White Sox add catching depth with Sanchez

TORONTO -- The White Sox shored up their catching situation Tuesday, purchasing the contract of Hector Sanchez from Triple-A Charlotte and placing Kevan Smith on the 15-day disabled list with sacroiliac joint dysfunction. The move is retroactive to Monday.
Smith was scheduled to make his Major League debut in Monday's series opener against the Blue Jays, batting ninth and catching Miguel Gonzalez, but he was scratched after hurting himself during warmup. The 27-year-old was initially called up after the White Sox placed Alex Avila on the 15-day disabled list with a right hamstring strain.
Sanchez has hit .143 with two home runs in eight games for Charlotte this season, and he last saw Major League action with San Francisco, getting into 244 games as a member of the Giants from 2011-15. The switch-hitting backstop is known for his game calling ability and is expected to make his season debut in either Wednesday's series finale against the Blue Jays or Thursday's contest against the Orioles.

"He just kind of fits the mold as a catcher," manager Robin Ventura said. "He has a lot of trust from the guys as far as him being back there and understanding what he can get out of them."
Sanchez signed with Chicago in the offseason and familiarized himself with the White Sox pitching staff in Spring Training.
"It was all about making good relationships," Sanchez said. "That way when you get called up, you're ready to go and you know almost the entire pitching staff."
