Here's the White Sox player pool for their Spring Breakout game

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Much of the encouraging talk surrounding the 2026 White Sox centers on the continued development of their young core who gained valuable on-field experience during the ’25 season.

As they go, so will the team -- even with important new additions to the overall White Sox equation.

But there is a second wave of talented players arriving from within the system. Many of them are part of the roster for the upcoming Spring Breakout contest, so here’s a look at the particulars related to the White Sox involvement.

What is Spring Breakout?

In 2026, MLB Spring Breakout will again be a four-day event showcasing baseball’s future -- the current stars of Minor League Baseball – in 16 exhibition games played between teams composed of each MLB organization’s top prospects. The third edition will be held from March 19-22 at Grapefruit and Cactus League stadiums during Spring Training.

In 2027, Spring Breakout will be expanded into a single-elimination tournament format, with champions being crowned in both the Grapefruit and Cactus leagues.

When is the White Sox game?

The White Sox will face the Dodgers on Saturday, March 21, with a 5:30 p.m. CT first pitch. The contest will be hosted by Los Angeles, following its Cactus League contest against the Athletics at the same Camelback Ranch locale. The two teams share the facility throughout Spring Training.

Notable position players

Braden Montgomery is the No. 36 prospect overall, per MLB Pipeline, and the No. 1 White Sox prospect. The switch-hitter also has made a strong impact as a non-roster invite to big league camp, launching a home run and triple during a victory at the Cubs on Sunday.

“Yeah, it’s super cool,” said Montgomery of his Spring Training experience. “I see all the Spring Training stadiums, and it reminds me of the top-tier college stadiums, just like their layout. Not many college teams are bringing 15,000 to the field each day. But it’s super cool.

“It’s also a little reminiscent of Omaha and the College World Series. It’s its own different thing -- it’s pro ball. It’s really cool just to take those steps forward and see these different atmospheres and still playing the same game.”

Shortstops Caleb Bonemer, ranked No. 61 overall and No. 3 for the White Sox, and Billy Carlson, sitting No. 73 and No. 5, join this competition from the Minor League side.

Carlson is one of the best defensive infield prospects in the game, while Bonemer is coming off 2025 Most Valuable Player honors in the Carolina League at age 19. Bonemer turned 20 on Oct. 5 after spending the offseason working out with Major Leaguers through the Bledsoe Agency in Nashville, Tenn.

“Yeah, I think just stay healthy, stay relaxed, and kind of keep working on things I’ve been working on,” said Bonemer of his goals for ’26. “If I do that, I’ll be in a great spot. Looking forward to it.”

Also keep an eye on infielder Sam Antonacci (No. 9 White Sox), who homered off Jameson Taillon and Tanner Bibee before leaving White Sox camp to join Team Italy in the World Baseball Classic. Antonacci was hit by a pitch 39 times in ’25, so that’s a painful part of his game possibly in play.

Infielder William Bergolla Jr. (No. 11 White Sox) is emerging quickly within the organization.

“I don’t know if I’m supposed to say this, but he’s one of our favorites,” said White Sox manager Will Venable. “It seemed like he made every single play, got big hits, great defensively and just has an incredible feel for the game.”

"We definitely have a strong group of middle infielders, and I think that's good,” said Bergolla through interpreter Billy Russo. “That's going to push every one of us to try to do our best, to earn more game time. That's motivation too, because we all want to be the best."

Notable pitchers

Left-handers Noah Schultz (No. 49 overall, No. 2 White Sox) and Hagen Smith (No. 72, No. 4) and right-hander Tanner McDougal (No. 6 White Sox) are together for Spring Breakout. They will also be together at Triple-A Charlotte to start the ’26 season and could be together in Chicago at some point during this upcoming campaign.

“Do what you feel comfortable with because you want to be completely convicted in every pitch you throw. We’ll both get there, we talk about it constantly,” said McDougal, referring specifically to himself and Schultz. “It’s a marathon, it’s not a sprint.

“What happened yesterday happened yesterday, what happens today, happens today. One day at a time.”

Right-hander David Sandlin (No. 18 White Sox), acquired during the off-season in a trade with Boston, was in big league camp with Schultz, Smith and McDougal and could follow their same path from Spring Breakout to Charlotte and eventually to the White Sox. Left-hander Christian Oppor (No. 8 White Sox) and right-hander Mathias LaCombe (No. 17) are an additional pair of talented pitching prospects on the roster.
