Willson Contreras placed on injured list with hamstring strain

BOSTON, MA — The Boston Red Sox on Monday placed first baseman Willson Contreras on the 10-Day Injured List with a left hamstring strain. To fill his spot, Boston recalled catcher/first baseman Mickey Gasper from Triple-A Worcester.
Contreras, 34, was removed in the seventh inning from yesterday’s game against the New York Yankees. The right-handed hitter has batted .274 (119-for-434) with 21 doubles, three triples, 26 home runs, 79 RBI, 66 runs scored, 57 walks, and a .900 OPS in 125 games this year for Boston, making 123 starts at first base and one as the designated hitter. Originally signed as an international free agent by the Chicago Cubs in July 2009, the Venezuela native has hit .260 (1,073-for-4,134) with 229 doubles, 14 triples, 198 home runs, 627 RBI, and an .820 OPS in 1,203 career Major League games for the Cubs (2016-22), St. Louis Cardinals (2023-25), and Red Sox (2026).
Gasper, 30, has played in 45 games with Boston this season, batting .278 (37-for-133) with eight doubles, one triple, five home runs, 19 RBI and an .840 OPS, while making 22 starts as the designated hitter, 12 as the catcher, and two at first base. The switch-hitter has also played in 54 games this year for Worcester, hitting .337 (66-for-196) with 18 doubles, nine home runs, 42 RBI, 42 walks, 41 runs scored, a .450 on-base percentage, and a 1.016 OPS. Originally selected by the New York Yankees in the 27th round of the 2018 First-Year Player Draft, the New Hampshire native has hit .211 (52-for-246) in 103 career Major League games for the Red Sox (2024, 2026) and Minnesota Twins (2025).
