BOSTON -- For several days, Red Sox manager Alex Cora has been trying to find a way to give shortstop Xander Bogaerts a day off. A reason was created in Friday night's 14-10 win over the Mariners when Bogaerts exited in the seventh inning with a sprained left index finger.
The Red Sox do not believe the injury is serious, and the hope is that Bogaerts will be back in the lineup for Sunday's series finale. With a day of rest on Saturday, the streak of 30 straight starts for Bogaerts will come to an end.
"How's Xander? He's day to day," said Cora. "We'll see. [We'll] probably stay away from him tomorrow. We were looking for an off-day, and it just came up now. Hopefully he'll be ready to play on Sunday."
Bogaerts sustained the injury when he landed awkwardly on his hand while stealing second base in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Eduardo Núñez pinch-hit for Bogaerts in the seventh and promptly smashed an RBI single.

The Red Sox lost Bogaerts to a stint on the disabled list earlier this season when he fractured a bone in his left ankle.
Bogaerts, who went 1-for-4 with an RBI single, is an important piece for the Red Sox at the plate and in the field.
