Yankees recall Harvey, option Loaisiga

The Yankees have recalled right-hander Joe Harvey from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to fill the roster spot vacated by Jonathan Loáisiga, who was optioned to Triple-A after Tuesday’s game.

CC Sabathia is expected to take Loaisiga's spot in the rotation when he makes his return from the injured list this weekend against the White Sox. Sabathia, who is working his way back after undergoing right knee surgery and an angioplasty in the offseason, threw 4 2/3 innings of one-run ball for Class A Advanced Tampa in his first rehab start.

Loaisiga was recalled from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last Wednesday and made two starts with the Yankees, allowing three runs over seven innings combined. The right-hander threw 71 pitches over three frames in New York’s 6-3 loss to the Astros on Tuesday.

The 27-year-old Harvey gives the Yankees a fresh arm in the bullpen after the club used five relievers Tuesday. He has yet to make a big league appearance, though he owns a lifetime 1.72 ERA in the Minors.

Loaisiga, who ranks 65th on MLB Pipeline's Top 100 Prospects list and is New York's second-ranked prospect, could get additional starting opportunities with the Yankees later this season, especially after it was announced Tuesday that Luis Severino will be shut down from throwing for six weeks due to a Grade 2 lat strain.
