Nats-Yanks suspended; resumes at 5:05 ET

WASHINGTON -- The potential World Series preview between two of baseball's hottest teams was put on hold Tuesday night, with the Yankees and Nationals suspended in a 3-3 tie in the sixth inning as thunderstorms pelted the D.C. area.
This game will resume, with the score still tied at 3, on Wednesday at 5:05 p.m. ET prior to the regularly scheduled game at 7:05 p.m. Fans with tickets to the 7:05 p.m. game can attend the conclusion of the suspended game.
Washington jumped out to a three-run lead after a solo home run from Anthony Rendon and a pair of run-scoring hits from Andrew Stevenson and Pedro Severino. They even led by a run entering the fifth with the weather worsening and the game close to becoming official, but the Yankees roared back thanks to Tyler Austin, who had already hammered a two-run homer in the fourth, and then added a sacrifice fly to tie the score in the fifth.

By the time right-hander Wander Suero tossed a scoreless sixth inning, the rain had intensified too much. The scoreboard advised fans to take cover while the sixth played out before the delay.
"You can't predict the weather," manager Dave Martinez said. "We told them, 'Hey, we always want to score first.' We did that, we just couldn't hold the lead."

The Yankees arrived at Nationals Park having won 19 of their past 22 games after thumping many of their potential postseason opponents in the American League. Meanwhile, the Nationals have won 13 of their past 15 games and just handed the D-backs a four-game sweep in Arizona.
"In order to get to where you want to be, these are the teams you've got to beat," Martinez said prior to the game. "And I think we both match up really well."

Both teams were clicking heading into this highly anticipated matchup, and they played each other into a draw through the first five innings.
Each time left-hander Gio Gonzalez pitched himself into trouble, he worked his way out. He gave up six hits, walked four and hit a batter, but he limited New York to just the three runs (two earned) in five innings. However, his thoughts on this outing were brief.
"See you tomorrow," Gonzalez said. "It's still 3-3."

After the conclusion of the suspended game, Max Scherzer will start against the Yankees at 7:05 p.m. ET. New York has been, perhaps, the hottest team in baseball with one of the game's most dangerous lineups, which are challenges Scherzer -- off to a fast start of his own -- will relish. CC Sabathia will take the hill for the visitors.
