A's agree to terms with catcher Jonathan Lucroy on one-year contract
The Oakland A's agreed to terms with free agent catcher Jonathan Lucroy on a one-year contract, the club announced today. To clear a spot on the 40-man roster the A's designated left-handed pitcher Jairo Labourt for assignment.
Lucroy combined to hit .265 with six home runs and 40 RBI in 123 games with Texas and Colorado in 2017. He began the season with the Rangers and was hitting .242 in 77 games when he was traded to Colorado for Pedro Gonzalez on July 30. The 31-year-old right-handed hitter then batted .310 with 46 games with the Rockies. He became a free agent following the season.
Lucroy was originally selected by Milwaukee in the third round of the 2007 draft and made his Major League debut with the Brewers in 2010. He was a two-time All-Star for Milwaukee in 2014 and 2016 and finished fourth in National League MVP voting in 2014 when he hit .301 with 53 doubles, two triples, 13 home runs and 69 RBI. Lucroy was dealt to Texas at the 2016 trading deadline and combined with both clubs to hit .292 with a career-high 24 home runs that year. He is a .281 career hitter with 96 home runs and 458 RBI in 975 games in eight seasons in the majors. Lucroy has tossed out 177 attempted base stealers in his career, which are the most by a Major League catcher dating back to 2010.
Labourt was claimed off waivers from Cincinnati on March 4 after the Reds claimed him off waivers from Detroit on March 2. He has not pitched this spring. Labourt made his Major League debut with the Tigers last year and compiled a 4.50 ERA and .200 opponents batting average in six relief appearances during a September call-up.
