ANGELS SIGN RHP KIRBY YATES
ANAHEIM – The Angels today agreed to a one-year, $5 million contract with RHP Kirby Yates.
A two-time All-Star (2019 and 2024), Yates, 38, owns a career 30-24 record with a 3.36 ERA (452.2 IP – 169 ER), 98 saves and 623 strikeouts across 472 appearances. As a member of the Dodgers in 2025, the right hander appeared in 50 games and posted a 4-3 record with a 5.23 ERA (41.1 IP – 24 ER), 52 strikeouts and three saves. He did not allow an earned run in 35 of 50 outings last season and posted a 2.95 ERA (18.1 IP – 6 ER) across his first 21 appearances. 2025 marked Yates’ third consecutive year making at least 50 appearances, and his sixth such season in his career.
A native of Lihue, HI, Yates posted a 2.23 ERA (194.0 IP – 48 ER) with 81 saves and 280 strikeouts in 197 total games from 2019-2024. He finished in the top 10 in Cy Young Award voting twice (ninth in 2019, eighth in 2024), including when he led the Majors with 41 saves in 2019 as a member of the Padres.
Yates was originally selected in the 26th round of the 2005 Draft by Boston from Kauai High School (Lihue, HI), but did not sign. He later signed with Tampa Bay as a non-drafted free agent out of Yavapai College (Prescott, AZ) and made his Major League debut on June 7, 2014 with the Rays. Across 11 career Major League seasons, Yates has pitched for the Rays (2014-2015), Yankees (2016), Angels (2017), Padres (2017-2020), Braves (2022-2023), Rangers (2024), and Dodgers (2025).
