Cain, Vargas named Royals player, pitcher of the month for June

The Kansas City Royals announced today that center fielder Lorenzo Cain and left-handed pitcher Jason Vargas have been named Royals Player and Pitcher of the Month, respectively, for the month of June. The awards are determined by a local media vote.
Cain hit .333 (33-for-99) in the month of June with eight home runs, setting a new career high for homers in a calendar month. He recorded his fourth and fifth career multi-homer games on June 10 and 16, including his second career grand slam on June 10. He also homered in three straight games from June 14-16, the longest streak of his career. He hit .417 (15-for-36) with six home runs and 11 RBI during the club's nine-game, west coast road trip from June 9-18, becoming the seventh player all-time to record 15 hits, six home runs and 11 RBI on a road trip of nine games or fewer, according to STATS LLC. Cain scored 26 runs, matching a club record for June (fourth time), and were the most in any calendar month by a Royal since Alex Gordon scored 26 in August of 2011. This is Cain's second Royals Player of the Month award (also, July of 2015).
Jason won all six of his starts in June, becoming the second Royal to go 6-0 or better in a calendar month, joining Bret Saberhagen, who went 7-0 in August of 1989. He ranked third in the American League with a 1.98 ERA (9 ER in 41.0 IP), allowing no more than three runs in any start. Vargas recorded his seventh career shutout and 12th complete game on June 2 vs. Cleveland, holding the Indians to seven hits and one walk in a 4-0 win. This is Vargas' second Royals Pitcher of the Month award (also, April of this season).
