Cardinals Sign Free Agent Ramón Urías

JUPITER, Fla., February 21, 2026 – The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have signed free agent infielder Ramón Urías to a one-year contract for 2026 with a mutual option for 2027. Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Urías, 32, has played in 541 games over six Major League seasons primarily with the Baltimore Orioles. He split last season between the Orioles and Houston Astros following a trade on July 31.

The right-handed hitting infielder has a career batting average of .257 with 50 home runs and 215 RBI while posting a .723 on-base + slugging mark.

The multi-positional defender has played 371 games at third base, 108 at second base, 61 at shortstop and 18 at first base. Urías became the 4th Mexican-born player to win a Rawlings Gold Glove when he was voted the top defensive third baseman in the American League following the 2022 season. He joined Fernando Valenzuela (1981), Aurelio Rodríguez (1976) and Ruben Amaro, Sr. (1964) among his fellow countrymen to win the prestigious Gold Glove Award.

Urías was signed as a 16-year-old international free agent by the Texas Rangers before his contract was sold to the Diablos Rojos of the Mexican League, where he played five seasons from 2013-17.

In 2018, the Cardinals purchased Urías from the Diablos Rojos on January 2 and he was part of the Memphis Redbirds (AAA) run to the 2018 Pacific Coast League Championship that season.

The Orioles acquired Urías via a waiver claim from St. Lous on February 11, 2020 and his career launched during the COVID-19 pandemic-shortened season, making his Major League debut in August of 2020.

Over the past five seasons, Urías has been on the Opening Day roster each year (2021-25) and he participated in two postseason series with the Orioles, playing in both the 2023 American League Division Series and 2024 Wild Card Series.

To make room for Urías on the team’s 40-player Major League roster, pitcher Zak Kent has been designated for assignment. Urías has been assigned uniform no. 33.
