Rockies select first baseman Lavigne, pitcher Kilkenny in MLB Draft

With the 42nd overall pick in the 2018 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, the Colorado Rockies selected first baseman Grant Lavigne from Bedford (N.H.) High School. Additionally, with the 76th overall selection as compensation for losing reliever Greg Holland to free agency, the Rockies selected right-handed pitcher Mitchell Kilkenny from Texas A&M University.
 
Lavigne, a left-handed hitter, has hit .588 with six home runs, 25 RBI and 17 stolen bases in 17 games with Bedford High School and was named the New Hampshire Gatorade Player of the Year, his second Player of the Year Award after also winning his sophomore season. 
 
The Wake Forest University commit was also named a Rawlings-Perfect Game Second Team All-American and was named to USA Today's American Family Insurance ALL-USA New Hampshire First Team.
 
The 6-foot-4, 230-pounder is the earliest draft pick in New Hampshire state history.
 
Kilkenny, a junior at Texas A&M, went 8-5 with a 3.34 ERA (97.0 IP, 36 ER), 24 walks and 92 strikeouts in 16 starts. The 6-foot-3, 205-pounder was predominantly used as a reliever in 2017 when he went 3-3 with seven saves, a 3.56 ERA (55.2 IP, 22 ER), 18 walks and 56 strikeouts in 25 appearances, including five starts.
 
The Rockies had three selections on the first day of MLB's annual amateur draft. They selected left-handed pitcher Ryan Rolison from the University of Mississippi as their first pick, 22nd overall, in the draft.
 
The draft will continue Tuesday with rounds three through 10, and will conclude Wednesday with rounds 11-40.
