Dodgers acquire Breyvic Valera from Cardinals

LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Dodgers today acquired infielder Breyvic Valera from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for minor league outfielder Johan Mieses.
Valera, 26, has posted a .303 career batting average with 130 doubles, 36 triples, 14 home runs, 304 RBI and 236 stolen bases along with a .359 on-base percentage in 800 minor league games over eight seasons with the Cardinals organization (2010-17). The speedy utility player has played the majority of his career at second base (444 games), but has also seen time at shortstop (121 games), third base (64 games), left field (103 games), right field (37 games) and center field (10 games).
In 2017, Valera made his big league debut with St. Louis after being called-up to the big league club on September 5 and went 1-for-10 (.100) with one walk in five games. He spent the majority of the season with Triple-A Memphis, slashing .314/.368/.450 with 22 doubles, six triples, eight home runs, 41 RBI and 11 stolen bases in 117 games. Following the season, he played for the Bravos de Margarita in the Venezuelan Winter League, where he was named the league's Most Valuable Player.
Valera was originally signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Cardinals on May 16, 2010.
Mieses, 22, hit .247 with 96 doubles, 13 triples, 68 home runs and 207 RBI in 411 career minor league games over five seasons with the Dodgers organization (2013-17).
The Dodgers now have 40 players on the 40-man roster.
