Dodgers Add Will Smith, Dalton Rushing, Alex Freeland and Justin Wrobleski
LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Dodgers have activated catchers Will Smith and Dalton Rushing and left-handed pitcher Justin Wrobleski from the injured list, and added infielder Alex Freeland to the active roster. In order to make room on the roster, the Dodgers optioned outfielder Alek Thomas and designated catcher Ben Rortvedt for assignment.
Smith, 31, has been out since June 6 with a neck injury. Prior to the injury, he played in 52 contests, batting .249 with six homers and 23 RBI this season. He made five rehab starts for Triple-A Oklahoma City, batting .250 with two doubles and one homer. The three-time All-Star is in his eighth campaign with the Dodgers and he has slashed .263/.357/.470 with 134 homers and 465 RBI in 774 games. He was drafted by the Dodgers in the first round (32nd overall) in the 2016 First Year Player Draft out of the University of Louisville.
Rushing, 25, has been out since August 3 with a right arm injury. Prior to getting hurt, he appeared in a career-high 74 games this season, hitting .253 with 12 homers and 36 RBI. He is in his second season with the Dodgers, playing in 127 games, batting .234 with 16 homers and 60 RBI. The backstop has been in the organization since being drafted in the second round of the 2022 First Year Player Draft out of the University of Louisville. In 268 minor league games, he batted .278 with 54 homers and 187 RBI.
Wrobleski, 26, returns to the roster after making one rehab appearance with Triple-A Oklahoma City. On Saturday night with the Comets, he threw 1.1 innings, allowing one run and striking out two. He is 11-5 with a 3.56 ERA on the campaign. The All-Star has been with the Dodgers three seasons, collecting a 17-12 record with a 4.12 ERA in 53 games (28 starts). He was drafted by the Dodgers in the 11th round of the 2021 First Year Player Draft out of Oklahoma State University.
Freeland, 25, returns for his third stint with the club after playing in 72 games, slashing .231/.309/.313 with three homers and 19 RBI with the Dodgers. He played in 38 games for Triple-A Oklahoma City, clubbing five homers and driving in 26. He debuted in 2025, notching two homers with six RBI in 29 games. He was drafted by Dodgers in the third round of the 2022 First Year Player Draft out of the University of Central Florida and has compiled a .257 batting average with an .799 OPS and 51 homers in 395 minor league games.
Thomas, 26, played in seven games for the Dodgers, hitting .211 with one double and three RBI. He joined the Dodgers on May 12 via trade from the Arizona Diamondbacks and appeared in 59 minor league games with the ACL Dodgers and Triple-A Oklahoma City, slashing .285/.351/.472 with seven homers and 40 RBI. Prior to being designated for assignment on May 8, he played in 28 games for the Diamondbacks, batting .181 with two homers and 10 RBI. He has spent five seasons in the Major Leagues with the D-Backs (2022-26) and Dodgers (2026), playing 455 games and clubbing 31 homers and driving in 146. He was drafted by Arizona in the second round of the 2018 First Year Player Draft out of Mount Carmel High School (Il.).
Rortvedt, 28, played in 16 games for the Dodgers, batting .185 with one RBI. He was with Triple- A Syracuse before he was acquired by the Dodgers at the trade deadline from the New York Mets and played in 48 games, hitting .235 with six homers and 26 RBI. Last season, he played in 18 games for Los Angeles, batting .224 with one homer and four RBI while helping the Dodger starters to an MLB-best 2.17 ERA in the month of September. He made his Major League debut in 2021 with the Minnesota Twins and has been part of the New York Yankees (2023), Rays (2024-25) and Dodgers (2025-26), hitting a combined .189 with nine homers and 53 RBI in 243 games. He was drafted in the second round of the 2016 First Year Player Draft out of Verona High School in Wisconsin.
