Giancarlo Stanton of the Miami Marlins named National League Player of the Week

Miami Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton has been named the National League Player of the Week for the period ending August 13th. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network.
Stanton posted a slash line of .333/.379/1.037 with eight runs scored, nine hits, a double, six home runs and 11 RBI over seven games played to claim his fifth career NL Player of the Week Award, last winning on July 11, 2016. Giancarlo paced all Major League batters in home runs, RBI and total bases (28), while finishing the period tied for first in extra-base hits (7) and second in slugging percentage. This is Miami's fourth Player of the Week Award this season, joining the Los Angeles Dodgers as the only two teams in Baseball with four weekly winners apiece. Other Marlins to win this season include Stanton's teammates Edinson Volquez, who took home weekly honors for the period ending June 4th after logging his first career no-hitter; Marcell Ozuna (April 16th); and J.T. Realmuto (April 9th).
On Thursday against the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park, the four-time NL All-Star connected for his 39th home run on the season, as well as his 18th round-tripper over his last 30 games. With the long ball, Stanton, who helped Team USA to its first World Baseball Classic gold medal this past March, established a new club record for homers over a 30-game span. The impressive total is the most among active Major Leaguers, while Josh Hamilton was the last player to record 18 homers in a 30-game stretch, accomplishing the feat during his 43-home run season in 2012. In Miami's following contest against the Colorado Rockies at Marlins Park, the 27-year-old slugger clubbed his 40th home run on the season in Miami's 114th game of the 2017 campaign. Since 2001, Stanton reached the 40-homer mark in the third-fewest games played by his team, trailing only David Ortiz (110) in 2006 and Chris Davis (110) in 2013. The Panorama City, California native concluded his award-winning week by homering for the fourth time in as many games on Sunday afternoon against Colorado. The Marlins' second round selection in the 2007 MLB Draft homered in four straight contests for the second time in his career (also August 14-17, 2011), matching the franchise record shared by seven others. With his home run in the third inning, Miami's all-time home run leader logged his 42nd homer this season, already matching Gary Sheffield (1996) for the single-season Club record. In addition, the blast was the 250th of his career in his 3,405th career at-bat. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the 2016 T-Mobile Home Run Derby Champion, who also participated in front of his home crowd during the 2017 T-Mobile Home Run Derby, became the fifth-fastest to reach the milestone in MLB history, trailing only Hall of Famers Harmon Killebrew (3,097 at-bats), Ralph Kiner (3,133) and Babe Ruth (3,145), as well as Ryan Howard (3,166).
Other noteworthy performances last week included shortstop Paul DeJong (.387, 3 2B, 3 HR, 8 RBI) and All-Star starting pitcher Carlos Martínez (2-0, 3.21 ERA, 14.0 IP, 14 SO) of the St. Louis Cardinals; defending NL MVP Kris Bryant (.609, 14 H, 4 XBH, .679 OBP) of the Chicago Cubs; outfielder Ryan Braun (.517, 15 H, 4 2B, 2 SB) of the Milwaukee Brewers; All-Star closer Kenley Jansen (4 SV, 0.00 ERA, 5 SO) of the Dodgers; and All-Star first baseman Joey Votto (.364, 10 R, 2 HR, 12 BB) of the Cincinnati Reds.
