Mariners outright OF Leonys Martin to AAA Tacoma
Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today that outfielder Leonys Martin has been outrighted to AAA Tacoma.
Martin was designated for assignment by Seattle on April 23.
Martin, 29, hit .111 (6x54) with 5 runs, 1 double, 4 steals, a .172 on-base percentage and a .130 slugging percentage in 15 games with the Mariners this season.
In 2016, he hit .247 (128x518) with 17 doubles, 3 triples, 15 home runs and 24 steals in 143 games. He ranked second among American League center fielders with 11 outfield assists.
Martin was originally acquired by the Mariners along with RHP Anthony Bass from Texas in exchange for RHP Tom Wilhelmsen, OF James Jones and a player to be named later (Partrick Kivlehan, Dec. 2, 2015) on Nov. 16, 2015. The native of Villa Clara, Cuba, has appeared in parts of 7 Major League seasons with the Rangers (2011-15) and Mariners (2016-17), posting a career batting average of .248 (473x1904) with 245 runs, 70 doubles, 18 triples, 35 home runs, 167 RBI and 112 steals in 587 career games.
