Mariners recall outfielder John Andreoli from Triple-A Tacoma
Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today the following roster moves:
· John Andreoli, OF, selected from AAA Tacoma.
· Dan Altavilla, RHP, optioned to AAA Tacoma.
Andreoli (#57) will be in uniform and available for tonight's (7:05 pm PT) game against the Oakland Athletics at Oakland Coliseum. Seattle's Major League, 40-man roster is now at 40 players.
Andreoli, 27, was hitting .294 (37-for-126) with 21 runs, 7 doubles, 2 triples, 3 home runs and 20 RBI in 32 games with AAA Tacoma this season. He hit exactly .300 (30x100) vs. right-handed pitching and .382 (13-for-34) with runners in scoring position. Andreoli was on the Rainiers disabled list from April 22-May 2 with a sprained finger on his right hand. He'll be making his Major League debut when he appears with the Mariners.
Andreoli was signed by Seattle as a minor league free agent on Dec. 8, 2017. He spent the past three seasons (2015-17) with AAA Iowa in the Chicago Cubs system. Last year, he hit .244 (105x430) in 119 games with 81 runs, 24 doubles, 8 triples, 14 home runs and 26 stolen bases. He was T1st in the Pacific Coast League in steals, T10th in triples and 11th in runs.
The Worchester, MA, native was drafted by Chicago-NL in the 17th round of the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Connecticut. In 8 minor league seasons (2011-18), he's appeared in 716 games, hitting a combined .269 with 116 doubles, 41 triples, 37 home runs and 240 RBI with 237 stolen bases.
Altavilla, 25, is 3-2 with 4 holds and a 3.24 ERA (6 ER, 16.2 IP) in 18 relief appearances with the Mariners this season. He has struck out 19 and walked 12 while limiting opponents to a .161 (9x56) average against. Since his return from the disabled list on May 12, Dan is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA (0 ER, 4.1 IP) in 5 games. Opposing hitters are just 1-for-11 (.071) against him. He went 1-1 with 2 holds and a 1.29 ERA (1 ER, 7.0 IP) with 9 strikeouts and 3 walks in his first 7 outings of the season (3/29-4/14), but was 1-1 with 2 holds and an 8.44 ERA (5 ER, 5.1 IP) with 7 strikeouts and 6 walks in 6 games from April 17 to April 29 prior to being placed on the DL.
Altavilla was on the 10-day disabled list from May 1 (retroactive to April 30)-May 12 with right AC joint inflammation. He began a rehab assignment with AA Arkansas on May 10. He pitched 1.0 inning that night, striking out 2.
In 2017, the 5-foot-11, 200-pound right-hander went 1-1 with a 4.24 ERA (22 ER, 46.2 IP) with 52 strikeouts and 20 walks in 41 relief appearances with the Mariners. He also made 20 appearances with AAA Tacoma, where he went 2-0 with 6 saves and a 1.54 ERA (4 ER, 23.1 IP) with 36 strikeouts and 15 walks. In parts of 3 Major League seasons with the Mariners (2016-c), he is 4-3 with a 3.24 ERA (29 ER, 75.2 IP) with 81 strikeouts and 33 walks in 74 games.
