Marlins select LHP Braxton Garrett 7th overall in 2016 MLB Draft
The Miami Marlins tonight selected left-handed pitcher Braxton Garrett with the seventh overall pick in the 2016 MLB First-Year Player Draft. The announcement was made by Marlins Vice President of Scouting Stan Meek.
Garrett, 18, recently graduated from Florence (Ala.) High School. He was 6-2, 0.56 with 131 strikeouts and 13 walks in 65.1 innings during his senior season and was named the Gatorade Alabama Player of the Year.
The 6-3, 190-pounder won a Gold Medal with Team USA in the 18U World Cup in Japan last fall. He was named a Rawlings-Perfect Game Preseason All-American entering his senior year and tossed eight shutout innings in a 2-0 Florence win in the National High School Invitational in March.
Garrett is the first left-handed pitcher taken by Miami in the first round since 2012, when the club selected Andrew Heaney ninth overall out of Oklahoma State University.
The Marlins' next selection is the 84th overall pick, which will come during the third round. Rounds three through 10 of the MLB Draft will take place tomorrow, starting at 1:00 p.m. It will conclude Saturday with rounds 11 through 40, starting at noon.
