Miami Marlins Select Shortstop Jacob Lombard with 14th Overall Pick in the 2026 First-Year Player Draft

MIAMI – The Miami Marlins today selected shortstop Jacob Lombard with the 14th overall pick in the 2026 First-Year Player Draft out of Gulliver Preparatory School in Miami, Fla.

Lombard, 18, is ranked as the No. 5 prospect by both MLB Pipeline and Baseball America, as well as the second-highest ranked high school player in this year’s draft class per both publications. The right-handed hitter slashed .477/.607/.864 (42x88) with four doubles, 10 home runs, 25 RBI, and 14 stolen bases in his senior season at Gulliver Prep this Spring, drawing 24 walks against 15 strikeouts.

The 6-foot-3 shortstop and University of Miami commit was named the 2025 Prep Baseball All-American Game Most Valuable Player, which was hosted at loanDepot park in September 2025. Lombard was also awarded the Jackie Robinson Player of the Year Award at the Perfect Game All-American Classic, honoring the nation's top high school baseball prospect who exhibits outstanding character, leadership, and community involvement.

The son of Detroit Tigers’ Bench Coach and six-year MLB veteran George Lombard Sr., and younger brother of New York Yankees’ top prospect George Lombard Jr., Jacob and his family now join the Drews (Tim, J.D., Stephen) and Naylors (Josh, Bo, Myles) as the only baseball families with three players selected in the first two rounds.

Lombard joins right-handed pitcher Chris Volstad (2005) and catcher Charles Johnson (1993) as the only South Florida first-round selections in Franchise history. Volstad was selected by the Marlins out of Palm Beach Gardens High School, while Johnson was drafted out of the University of Miami (Coral Gables, Fla.).
