Mike Trout named AL Player of the Month for September
Milwaukee Brewers All-Star outfielder Christian Yelich has been voted the Budweiser Presents National League Player of the Month for September, and Los Angeles Angels All-Star outfielder Mike Trout has been voted the Budweiser Presents American League Player of the Month for September.
Trout batted .329 (25-for-76) with 13 runs scored, 25 hits, three doubles, eight home runs, 16 RBI, 17 walks and three stolen bases over 24 games played to earn his fifth career AL Player of the Month Award, last winning in April 2017. Among qualified AL hitters, the right-handed-hitting slugger finished third in on-base percentage (.469) and slugging percentage (.684); tied for third in home runs; fifth in walks; and tied for seventh in stolen bases. This is the Angels' first Player of the Month Award this season, and the first since Mike's previous honor in 2017.
On September 3rd against the Texas Rangers, Trout reached base four times and received his 20th intentional walk of the season. The New Jersey native became just the fourth player (fifth time) in Major League history to amass 20 intentional walks and 20 stolen bases in a single campaign, joining Ichiro Suzuki (2002 & 2005), Rafael Palmeiro (1993) and Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson (1974). On September 8th against the Chicago White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field, Trout batted a perfect 5-for-5 with three runs scored, two home runs and five RBI to lead the Angels to a 12-3 victory. The outing marked his 14th career multi-homer game, and the fourth of the 2018 campaign (also: June 11th, June 12th, July 25th). In Friday night's contest against the Oakland Athletics, the 27-year-old clubbed his 39th home run of the season to go along with two runs scored and a pair of RBI. Trout's 39-homer campaign is the second-most in his career, trailing his 2015 season in which he logged 41 round-trippers. In addition, the two-time AL MVP tallied his 100th run of the 2018 season, reaching the century mark for the sixth time in his career. The eight-year veteran became just the seventh player in Baseball history to post 100 runs in six seasons prior to his age-27 season, joining Hall of Famers Hank Aaron, Mickey Mantle and Mel Ott, as well as Alex Rodriguez and Bill Dahlen. Additionally, the Angels' first round selection of the 2009 MLB Draft joined Hall of Famer Willie Mays as the only players in MLB history to total 30 homers and 20 stolen bases in three campaigns prior to their age-27 season.
Others receiving votes for AL Player of the Month included outfielder Tommy Pham (.368, 26 R, 16 XBH, 16 RBI) of the Tampa Bay Rays; first baseman Luke Voit (.333, 5 2B, 10 HR, 22 RBI) of the New York Yankees; All-Star outfielder Mookie Betts (.377, 20 R, 12 XBH, 4 SB) of the Boston Red Sox; outfielders Khris Davis (21 R, 7 2B, 5 HR, 17 RBI) and Stephen Piscotty (.310, 21 R, 13 XBH, 25 RBI) of the Athletics; shortstop Adalberto Mondesi (.282, 20 R, 31 H, 14 SB) of the Kansas City Royals; second baseman Robinson Canó (.343, 8 2B, 4 HR, 20 RBI) of the Seattle Mariners; third baseman Adrián Beltré (.279, 8 2B, 8 HR, 18 RBI) of the Texas Rangers; first baseman Yuli Gurriel (.356, 14 R, 9 XBH, 21 RBI) of the Houston Astros; outfielder Nicholas Castellanos (.350, 15 R, 15 XBH, 16 RBI) of the Detroit Tigers; and Trout's teammate, AL Rookie of the Month Shohei Ohtani (.310, 5 2B, 7 HR, 18 RBI).
