Padres Acquire RHP Casey Mize and INF Gage Workman from Tigers
SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Padres have acquired right-handed pitcher Casey Mize and infielder Gage Workman from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for left-handed pitchers Kash Mayfield and Jackson Wolf, President of Baseball Operations and General Manager A.J. Preller announced today.
Mize, 29, has logged a 4-6 record with a 2.70 ERA (26 ER, 86.2 IP) and 85 strikeouts to 19 walks across 16 starts for Detroit this season. Out of those 16 starts, he has allowed one run or less nine times, and in his last 11 starts, he has struck out 53 batters with only nine walks. The 6-foot-3, 212-pound right-hander’s ERA ranks fifth best among American League pitchers who have made at least 15 starts this season, and although he is the only pitcher to have a sub-.500 winning percentage and a sub-3.00 ERA in 15 or more starts this season, his 2.59 FIP ranks sixth among all Major League starters.
A six-year Major League veteran and the No. 1 overall pick by Detroit in the 2018 MLB First-Year Player Draft, he has gone 27-31 with a 3.95 career ERA (231 ER, 526.2 IP) and 450 strikeouts in 105 games (103 starts), all with the Tigers (2020-26). Among pitchers who have made 40 or more starts in the American League since 2025, Mize ranks tied for third in fewest walks allowed (55), fifth in FIP (3.36) and ninth in ERA (3.44). The Springville, Ala. native had a career-best season in 2025 after racking up a career-high 14 wins and 139 strikeouts in 28 starts and was selected to his first All-Star Game.
The 26-year-old Workman has appeared in 16 games for the Tigers this season, batting .158 (6-for-38) with three doubles, two home runs and five RBI. He also appeared in 82 games for Triple-A Toledo, batting .305 (99-for-325) with a .868 OPS, 25 doubles, three triples, 11 HR, 51 RBI, 20 stolen bases and 54 runs scored. Originally selected by the Tigers in the 4th round of the 2020 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Arizona State University, Workman has appeared in 28 Major League games with the Cubs (2025), White Sox (2025) and Tigers (2026). He has a career .253 average in 643 minor league games with 155 doubles, 33 triples, 83 HR, 362 RBI, 142 stolen bases and 400 runs scored.
