Phillies acquire Jay Bruce

The Phillies have acquired outfielder Jay Bruce and cash considerations from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for minor league third baseman Jake Scheiner, the club announced today. Bruce is signed through the 2020 season.

A left-handed hitter, Bruce is batting .212 this season with 11 doubles, 14 home runs, 28 RBI, 16 walks and an .816 OPS in 47 games. In his last 17 games, Bruce is hitting .281 with a .905 OPS. Earlier this season, he hit his 300th double and 300th home run.

Bruce, 32, is a three-time All-Star (2011-12, 2016) who has won two Silver Slugger Awards (2012-13) and a Wilson Defensive Player Award (2013). Among all active players, he ranks fifth with 98 career outfield assists.

A first-round selection (12th overall) of the Cincinnati Reds in the 2005 MLB Draft, Bruce has a .246 career average with 301 doubles, 300 home runs, 903 RBI, 585 walks and a .785 OPS for the Reds (2008-16), New York Mets (2016-18), Cleveland Indians (2017) and Seattle Mariners (2019). As a pinch-hitter, he has batted .283 (13-46) in his career with five extra-base hits, seven RBI and nine walks.

Scheiner, 23, was hitting .256 with two home runs and 20 RBI in 45 games for single-A Clearwater. Scheiner was selected in the fourth round of the 2017 MLB Draft by the Phillies out of the University of Houston.

Bruce will wear No. 23.
