Phillies Complete Day Two of 2021 MLB Draft Selections

The Phillies have completed their selections for the second day of the 2021 MLB Draft, with one selection in each of today's nine rounds. They selected five right-handed pitchers and four outfielders. Five were collegiate athletes, while four were selected out of high school. The club's selections from rounds 2-10 today are as follows:

Round 2 (No. 49)

• OF Ethan Wilson, University of South Alabama - Wilson, 21, batted .318 with 13 doubles, four triples, eight home runs, 34 RBI, 33 walks to just 21 strikeouts, 10 stolen bases, a .419 on-base percentage and a .528 slugging percentage in 57 games in 2021. The left-handed hitting and throwing outfielder had a .984 fielding percentage with two outfield assists. Wilson, an Alabama native, was named First-Team All-Sun Belt Conference and was named to the SBC Championship All-Tournament Team. He hit 28 home runs in 131 career collegiate games.

Round 3 (No. 84)

• OF Jordan Viars, Rick Reedy High School (TX) - Viars, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound outfielder, batted .464 with six doubles, three triples, eight home runs, 26 RBI, 26 walks, 33 runs scored, 16 steals, a .641 on-base percentage and 1.626 OPS in 34 games this season. The 17-year-old left-handed hitter is the 14th-youngest player in the draft class. He was named a North Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association All-Star following his senior season at Rick Reedy High School.

Round 4 (No. 114)

• RHP Micah Ottenbreit, Trenton High School (MI) - Ottenbreit, 18, went 7-1 with a 0.64 ERA, 0.66 WHIP and 95 strikeouts to 12 walks in his senior season at Trenton High School. The 6-foot-4, 190-pound righthander allowed only five earned runs all season. On May 11, he threw 8.0 scoreless, hitless innings with 14 strikeouts, helping Trenton to its second consecutive no-hitter.

Round 5 (No. 145)

• RHP Griff McGarry, University of Virginia - The 22-year-old McGarry made 14 appearances (11 starts) for the Cavaliers, striking out 69 batters in 43.0 innings pitched (14.44 SO/9.0 IP), while holding opponents to a .197 batting average during his senior season. During the COVID-shortened 2020 season, he went 3-0 with a 1.35 ERA. McGarry, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound native of Portola Valley, Calif., was originally selected by the Texas Rangers in the 31st round of the June 2017 draft.

Round 6 (No. 175)

• RHP Jose Pena Jr., Tampa Preparatory School (FL) - The 6-foot-3, 205-pound Pena posted a 2.31 ERA with 63 strikeouts and 20 hits allowed in 36.1 innings over nine appearances (8 starts) as a senior. He held opponents to a .142 batting average and .288 on-base percentage. On March 10, Pena threw a no-hitter, striking out 16 batters while walking only one. The native of Tampa, Fla., turned 18 last week.

Round 7 (No. 205)

• RHP Christian McGowan, Eastern Oklahoma State Junior College - McGowan, 21, went 9-0 with a 2.55 ERA, a complete game and 109 strikeouts in 74.0 innings (13.26 SO/9.0 IP) in 2021. He appeared 12 games, starting 11 of them. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound is a native of Bokchito, Okla.

Round 8 (No. 235)

• RHP Jason Ruffcorn, University of Oklahoma - The 22-year-old Cedar Park, Tex., native went 4-2 with three saves, a 4.00 ERA, 74 strikeouts to 17 walks in 54.0 innings and held opponents to a .214 average as a senior. Eighteen of his 21 appearances came in relief. Ruffcorn, who stands at 6-foot-2 and 215 pounds, was named All-Big 12 Second Team. His father, Scott, pitched parts of five seasons with the White Sox (1993-96) and Phillies (1997).

Round 9 (No. 265)

• OF Gavin Tonkel, Heritage High School (CA) - Tonkel, 18, batted .400 with 10 doubles, two triples, 16 RBI, a 1.068 OPS and 11 steals in 12 attempts over 21 games during his senior season. The right-handed hitting outfielder also recorded two outfield assists. Tonkel, who is 6-foot-2, 180 pounds, is a native of Brentwood, Calif.

Round 10 (No. 295)

• OF Logan Cerny, Troy University (VA) - The 21-year-old, right-handed hitting outfielder batted .332 with 17 doubles, four triples, 15 home runs, 47 RBI, 21 walks, 49 runs, 12 steals, a .424 on-base percentage and .694 slugging percentage during his junior season. He led the Sun Belt Conference in slugging percentage and finished second in home runs. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound Georgia native also recorded five outfield assists in his 51 games.

The club's third-round selection today was dedicated to the late Bart Braun, a special assistant to the general manager with the Phillies from 2012 until his passing in 2020. Braun was a third-round selection himself by the Oakland Athletics in the January 1976 draft.

"Bart lived for the draft every year and he knew the impact it could have on building a championship organization," said Phillies Assistant General Manager Scott Proefrock. "His passion for players and his zest for the pursuit of talent was infectious and it is his legacy."

The Phillies will select with the No. 13 pick in each round 11-20 tomorrow to complete the 2021 MLB Draft.
