Pirates Acquire Three Players In Three-Team Trade With Tampa Bay And Houston
The Pittsburgh Pirates today acquired second baseman Brandon Lowe (rhymes with “now”), outfielder Jake Mangum and left-handed pitcher Mason Montgomery from Tampa Bay. Additionally, Pittsburgh has traded right-handed pitcher Mike Burrows to Houston.
The 31-year-old Lowe, who was named an American League All-Star last season, batted .256 (130-for-507) with 19 doubles, 31 home runs and 83 RBI in 134 games with Tampa Bay. His 25 home runs as a second baseman were the most from the position in all of Major League Baseball. Lowe’s 31 total home runs exclusively as a left-handed hitter in 2025 were tied for the fifth-most in the American League. His 70 RBI as a second baseman were tied for the third-most from the position in all of Major League Baseball.
He hit 21 home runs in both the 2023 and 2024 seasons. Lowe’s 73 home runs exclusively as a left-handed hitter from the start of 2023 through the end of 2025 were the fourth-most in the American League during that span, behind only Corey Seager (84), Gunnar Henderson (82) and Rafael Devers (76).
Lowe hit a career-high 39 home runs and had a career-high 99 RBI in 2021. His 39 homers were tied for the sixth-most in Major League Baseball and trailed only Shohei Ohtani (46) for the most among lefties.
Over parts of eight Major League seasons, all with Tampa Bay (2018-25), Lowe has batted .247 (657-for 2657) with 126 doubles, 157 home runs, 446 RBI and an .807 OPS across 745 big-league games. He was also named to his first American League All-Star team in 2019, his first full season in Major League Baseball.
Lowe also appeared in 29 postseason games over three playoff seasons during his time with Tampa Bay.
The 29-year-old Mangum hit .296 (120-for-405) with 18 doubles, three home runs, 40 RBI and 27 stolen bases in 118 games as a rookie with Tampa Bay in 2025. Mangum, who was the recipient of the team’s Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association Heart & Hustle Award, had the second-most stolen bases among Major League rookies. He also ranked third among qualified rookies in batting and fifth in hits.
He hit .341 (28-for-82) in the month of September. Mangum’s average in the final month ranked second among all qualified Major League rookies, while his 34 total bases were tied for the eighth-most on that list.
Mangum, who debuted in 2025, was one of three Major League outfielders with a 1.000 fielding percentage (minimum 900.0 innings), along with Philadelphia’s Nick Castellanos and Washington’s Jacob Young.
The 25-year-old Montgomery struck out 63 batters over 46.0 innings of relief in his 57 appearances with Tampa Bay during the 2025 season. His 63 strikeouts were the fourth-most among all left-handed rookie relief pitchers in Major League Baseball (they were the 11th-most among all rookie relievers in the league).
Montgomery made his Major League debut with Tampa Bay in 2024, pitching to a 1.86 ERA (9.2ip/2er) while striking out 17 batters and recording a .188 batting average against in his nine relief outings.
