A’s place RHP Fiers on injured list; reinstate RHP Smith from injured list

OAKLAND, Calif. – The Oakland A’s placed right-handed pitcher Mike Fiers on the 10-day injured list retroactive to May 7 with a sprained right elbow and reinstated right-handed pitcher Burch Smith from the injured list, the club announced today.

Fiers did not pitch this spring and began the season on the injured list with a lumbar strain. He was reinstated on April 26 and went 0-2 with a 7.71 ERA in two starts before returning to the IL today. Prior to this year, Fiers had just one career stint on the IL and it came at the start of the 2018 season.

Smith was on the A’s Opening Day roster and logged a 3.00 ERA in two relief appearances before he was placed on the injured list April 6 retroactive to April 4 with a strained right groin. He was sent to Triple-A Las Vegas on a rehab assignment on Thursday and pitched that day against Sacramento, allowing a run on two hits in 1.1 innings while striking out two.
