Astros announce Minor League Players of the Month
HOUSTON, TX - The Houston Astros player development department has named LHP Colton Gordon the Astros Minor League Pitcher of the Month for July and OF Jacob Melton the Astros Minor League Player of the Month for July.
Gordon, 24, went 2-1 with a 2.25 ERA (6ER/24IP) in five starts in July for Double A Corpus Christi. The left-handed pitcher also recorded 37 strikeouts, eight walks, a 0.96 WHIP and a .174 opponent batting average in July. For the 2023 minor league season, Gordon has recorded a 3.30 ERA (33ER/90IP) with 116 strikeouts, a 1.11 WHIP and a .204 opponent batting average in 19 appearances, including 17 starts with Double A Corpus Christi. In the Texas League, he ranks first in opponent batting average, second in ERA, second in strikeouts, fourth in WHIP and eighth in innings pitched. Gordon was selected in the eighth round of the 2021 MLB First-Year Player Draft from the University of Central Florida.
Melton, 22, batted .318 (27x85) with 22 runs, nine doubles, five home runs, 13 RBI, 10 walks, 12 stolen bases and a .996 OPS (.600 SLG / .396 OBP) in 22 games with High A Asheville. For the 2023 minor league season, Melton is batting .259 (80x309) with 70 runs, 16 doubles, one triple, 17 home runs, 39 RBI, 45 walks, 40 stolen bases and an .837 OPS (.482 SLG / .355 OBP) in 78 games with High A Asheville. In the South Atlantic League, Melton ranks first in runs, first in stolen bases, second in home runs, tied for fifth in extra-base hits, fifth in total bases, eighth in slugging percentage and 10th in OPS. Melton was selected in the second round of the 2022 MLB First-Year Player Draft from Oregon State University.
