Astros claim RHP Penn Murfee off waivers

HOUSTON, TX – The Houston Astros have claimed right-handed pitcher Penn Murfee off waivers from the Atlanta Braves. To make room for Murfee on the 40-man roster, the Astros placed RHP Kendall Graveman on the 60-day IL. The announcement was made by Astros General Manager Dana Brown.

Murfee, 29, recorded a 1.29 ERA (2ER/14IP) with 16 strikeouts, a 1.07 WHIP and a .109 opponent batting average in 16 games with the Seattle Mariners in 2023. He didn’t make a Spring Training appearance this season due to recovering from a UCL procedure in June 2023. For his career, Murfee has posted a 2.70 ERA (25ER/83.1IP) with 92 strikeouts, a 0.97 WHIP and a .179 opponent batting average in 80 appearances.

Graveman, 33, underwent surgery on his right shoulder in January. He posted a 2.42 ERA (6ER/22.1IP) in 23 appearances in the regular season for the Astros in 2023 after being acquired from the White Sox via trade on July 28. At the end of the regular season, Graveman developed soreness in his right shoulder and could not pitch for the Astros in the postseason.

Following today’s moves, the Astros 40-man roster remains full.
