Blue Jays acquire McCoy

The Toronto Blue Jays have acquired INF Mason McCoy from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for RHP Trent Thornton. McCoy has been assigned to Triple-A Buffalo.

McCoy, 28, has slashed .234/.330/.407 while recording 32 extra-base hits and driving in 55 runs across 87 games for Triple-A Tacoma this season. The 5-11, 185 lb. was a sixth-round pick by the Baltimore Orioles in 2017 out of the University of Iowa. Over the course of six Minor League seasons, the native of Peoria, IL, has batted .260 while playing in 632 games.

Thornton, 29, has appeared in four games for the Blue Jays and 22 for Triple-A Buffalo this year. The right-hander was selected by the Houston Astros in the fifth round of the 2015 draft and made his debut with the Blue Jays in 2019. The University of North Carolina product made 35 starts and 73 relief appearances during his five seasons with Toronto, keeping a 4.77 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP.
