Boston's Adam Duvall, Colorado's C.J. Cron named Players of the Week presented by Chevrolet

Boston Red Sox outfielder Adam Duvall has been selected the American League Player of the Week presented by Chevrolet, and Colorado Rockies first baseman C.J. Cron has been named the National League Player of the Week presented by Chevrolet. The announcements were made earlier today on MLB Network.

Duvall, a veteran of 10 Major League seasons, earned his first career Player of the Week Award in his first week with the Red Sox. Dating to the final week of the 2022 season, the 2016 All-Star is the second consecutive Red Sox player to be honored after J.D. Martinez was AL Co-Player of the Week on October 6^th of last season. Cron, an All-Star in 2022, claimed his second career weekly honor after previously winning on August 9, 2021. He became the first Rockies player to take home a weekly honor since his teammate Brendan Rodgers on June 6^th of last season.

• The 34-year-old hit .571 with three doubles, a triple, two homers, eight RBI and six runs scored across three games while compilling a 1.357 slugging percentage and .600 on-base percentage.
• With the Red Sox trailing by one run in the bottom of the ninth on Saturday night against the visiting Baltimore Orioles, Duvall slugged a two-run walk-off homer to send Boston to the victory at Fenway Park. The blast capped a two-homer, four-hit day for the Kentucky native, who came up just a single shy of hitting for the cycle.
• The University of Louisville product followed up his heroics by leading the Sox to a 9-5 win and series victory over Baltimore on Sunday, going 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and two RBI.
• Duvall’s six extra-base hits over his first three games with Boston tied the most by any player in his first three games with a team since at least 1901, joining David Segui (SEA, 1998), Chris Dickerson (CIN, 2008), Mark Ellis (COL, 2011), Carlos Quentin (SD, 2012) and Rowdy Tellez (TOR, 2018). • Led by Duvall’s offensive exploits, the Red Sox scored nine runs in each of their first three games of the season, becoming the third team since 1901 to accomplish the feat along with the 1976 Reds and the 1978 Brewers.

C.J. Cron, Colorado Rockies (@ccron24)

• The 33-year-old hit .467 with two doubles, three home runs, seven RBI and three runs scored over four games while registering a 1.200 slugging percentage and a .529 on-base percentage.
• Cron led the Rockies to a 7-2 Opening Day win over the Padres at Petco Park in San Diego with a four-hit performance, which included two home runs and five RBI.
• The 10-year veteran homered again on Saturday and went 7-for-11 with two doubles and three homers in the first three games of the season, bcoming the eighth different player (ninth time overall) in franchise history to begin a season with at least seven hits in the first three games, and the first Rockies hitter to accomplish the feat since Carlos González in 2015.
• Furthermore, Cron became the first player in Rockies history with at least seven hits and three homers in the opening three games of a season, and the first Major League player to do so since Cody Bellinger of the Los Angeles Dodgers at the start of his 2019 NL MVP Award-winning season.

Other noteworthy AL performances last week included starting pitcher Jeffrey Springs (1-0, 6.0 IP, 0 H, 1 BB, 12 SO) and shortstop Wander Franco (.636, 3 2B, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 3 R, 1 SB, 1.182 SLG) of the Tampa Bay Rays; infielder Yoán Moncada (.444, 3 2B, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 3 R, .944 SLG) and starting pitcher Dylan Cease (0-0, 1.42 ERA, 6.1 IP, 2 H, 0 BB, 10 SO) of the Chicago White Sox; outfielder Cedric Mullins (.385, 2 HR, 7 RBI, 4 R, 3 SB, .467 OBP) of the Orioles; and designated hitter Yordan Alvarez (.455, 1 2B, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 4 R, .538 OBP) of the Houston Astros.

Other noteworthy NL performances for the week included outfielder Trayce Thompson (.375, 3 HR, 8 RBI, 3 R, 1.500 SLG) of the Dodgers, who recorded the first three-homer game of the 2023 season on Saturday night; shortstop Xander Bogaerts (.429, 2 2B, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 3 R, 1.000 SLG) of the Padres; infielder Luis Arraez (.563, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 2 R, .588 OBP) of the Miami Marlins; shortstop Dansby Swanson (.583, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 2 R, .615 OBP) and starting pitcher Marcus Stroman (1-0, 0.00 ERA, 6.0 IP, 3 H, 3 BB, 8 SO) of the Chicago Cubs; and designated hitter Nolan Gorman (.444, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 2 R, 1.111 SLG) of the St. Louis Cardinals.

Second baseman Jeff McNeil of the New York Mets earned his first career Play of the Week Award, and the first by a Mets player since his teammate Brandon Nimmo was awarded the honor last September. With the Mets trailing the Miami Marlins, 1-0, in the bottom of the fifth at loanDepot park on Friday night, McNeil slid to field a ball that trickled by first baseman Pete Alonso and threw to the plate to nab 2022 MLB stolen base leader Jon Berti as he tried to extend Miami’s lead. Additional Play of the Week candidates included Hunter Renfroe’s no-look catch in right field; Kyle Freeland’s extraordinary play off the mound; Jean Segura’s impressive snag at third base; Luis Robert’s sliding catch in deep left-center; Mookie Betts’ ninth-inning throw to the plate to get the potential go-ahead run; Dansby Swanson’s diving stop and throw from the ground; and Andrés Giménez’s athletic double play.
