Colorado Rockies agree to contract extension with right-handed pitcher Daniel Bard
DENVER – The Colorado Rockies announced today that they have agreed to a two-year contract extension with right-handed pitcher Daniel Bard, covering the 2023-24 seasons.
“We are excited to finalize a deal with Daniel that keeps him in Denver through 2024,” Rockies Senior Vice President and General Manager Bill Schmidt said. “Daniel has not only been effective on the field for the Rockies, but has added immeasurable value with his leadership in the clubhouse.”
Bard, 37, is 3-3 with a 1.91 ERA (37.2 IP, 8 ER) and has recorded 21 saves, which are tied for seventh-most in the Majors and fifth in the National League … his 91.3 save percentage (21 saves, 23 opportunities) ranks in the Majors … his .149 opponents’ batting average is tied for third lowest among all relievers … seventh pitcher in franchise history (eighth time, Huston Street 2x) with at least 20 saves prior to the All-Star Break … is donating $300 for each of his strikeouts this season to Fill the Void: Amp the Cause to End Hunger with the Colorado Rockies Foundation matching his donation … his 43 strikeouts thus far have raised a combined $25,800.
The Houston, Texas native has pitched parts of eight seasons for Boston (2009-13) and Colorado (2020-22), compiling a career 24-32 record with 52 saves and a 3.76 ERA (385.1 IP, 161 ER) in 338 games (10 starts) … made his debut for the Red Sox on May 13, 2009 at Anaheim and went on to finish the season 2-2 with a 3.65 ERA (49.1 IP, 20 ER) through 49 games … ranked among AL rookie relievers in SO/9 (11.49, first), strikeouts (63, fourth), opponent batting average (.228, eighth), games pitched (49, seventh) and innings pitched (49.1, ninth) … also made his first and only career postseason appearance, appearing in two ALDS games and tossing three perfect frames … earned the Fireman of the Year Award from the Boston Chapter of the BBWAA after tying for third among AL relievers with 76 strikeouts in 2010 … in 2011, ranked fifth among AL relievers in appearances (70) and opponent batting average (.179), while his 74 strikeouts ranked seventh … briefly retired from baseball, serving as a Player Mentor for the Arizona Diamondbacks 2018-19 … signed with the Rockies as a Minor League free agent Feb. 22, 2022 … named the 2020 Comeback Player of the Year by both the Sporting News and the Player’s Association after making his first Major League appearances since 2013 … made 67 appearances for the Rockies in 2021, his most since 2011 … in three seasons with the Rockies, is 14-13 with a 3.94 ERA (128.0 IP, 56 ER) and 47 saves, which rank seventh all-time in franchise history.
