Colorado Rockies announce 2021 Opening Day roster

DENVER – The Colorado Rockies today announced today that they have signed right-handed pitcher Jhoulys Chacín to a Major League contract and have designated right-handed pitcher Jairo Diaz for assignment.

Additionally, the Rockies have placed left-handed pitcher Kyle Freeland (left shoulder strain) and infielder Brendan Rodgers (right hamstring strain) on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to March 29.

With these transactions, the Rockies’ 26-man Opening Day roster is finalized. The Rockies open their 29th Major League season this afternoon at Coors Field against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Chacín returns to the Rockies after spending the first six years of his Major League career with the club (2009-14). Originally signed by the Rockies on Sept. 27, 2004 as a non-drafted international free agent, Chacín ranks ninth in franchise history with 109 games started and 10th with 38 wins. He will wear #43.

Four players are on the Opening Day roster for the first time: left-handed pitcher Ben Bowden, outfielder Yonathan Daza, catcher Dom Nuñez and right-handed pitcher Jordan Sheffield.

Right-handed Pitchers (12): Yency Almonte, Daniel Bard, Jhoulys Chacín, Carlos Estévez, Mychal Givens, Chi Chi González, Jon Gray, Tyler Kinley, Germán Márquez, Antonio Senzatela, Jordan Sheffield, Robert Stephenson

Left-handed Pitchers (2): Ben Bowden, Austin Gomber

Catchers (2): Elias Díaz, Dom Nuñez

Infielders (4): C.J. Cron, Josh Fuentes, Ryan McMahon, Trevor Story

Outfielders (4): Charlie Blackmon, Yonathan Daza, Sam Hilliard, Raimel Tapia

Infielder/Outfielders (2): Garrett Hampson, Chris Owings

Colorado has a full 40-man roster.
