Corey Seager, Trey Mancini Named W.B. Mason Players Of The Week

Shortstop Corey Seager of the Los Angeles Dodgers has been chosen the W.B. Mason National League Player of the Week and outfielder Trey Mancini of the Baltimore Orioles has been named the W.B. Mason American League Player of the Week. The announcements were made earlier today on MLB Network.

Seager earned his first career NL Player of the Week Award and is the third Dodger winner this season, following his All-Star teammates Cody Bellinger (April 7th) and Hyun-Jin Ryu (May 13th). Mancini also claimed his first career weekly honor and is the first Oriole to win since his former teammate Jonathan Schoop last season for the period ending July 30th.

In recognition of their Player of the Week Awards, Corey Seager and Trey Mancini will each be awarded a specially engraved watch courtesy of Artinian.

• Batted .500 (10-for-20) with five runs scored, two doubles, a triple, two home runs, seven RBI and a 1.000 slugging percentage over five games played.
• Logged a hit in each game during his award-winning week and enters play today in the midst of an eight-game hitting streak, dating back to September 13th.
• Has recorded two hits and a run scored in each of his previous five games (since Tuesday), tied for the 10th-longest such streak in franchise history, and the longest since Dee Gordon’s five game streak in 2014.
• Clubbed his 18th home run of the season in yesterday’s contest against the Colorado Rockies, leading the Dodgers to their 100th win of the season. Los Angeles has now reached the 100-win milestone twice in the last three seasons (also 2017) and is on pace to enter the Postseason with the best record in the National League.

Trey Mancini, Baltimore Orioles (@treymancini)

• Across six games, hit .462 (12-for-26) with four runs scored, 12 hits, four doubles, two home runs, 10 RBI and 22 total bases.
• Enters play today in the midst of a nine-game hitting streak dating back to September 13th, including six multi-hit efforts.
• Since the calendar flipped to September, has logged at least one hit in all but one of his 19 starts. Is currently slashing .354/.404/.620 with 12 runs scored, 28 hits, six doubles, five home runs and 19 RBI during his impressive month at the plate.
• Scored his 100th run of the season on Wednesday against the Toronto Blue Jays. Along with Jonathan Villar (106), became the first set of Orioles teammates to both reach the 100-run plateau since Chris Davis and Manny Machado in 2015.
• With 36 doubles, 34 home runs and 101 runs scored, became the seventh player in franchise history, and the first since Machado in 2016, to reach those totals in a single campaign.

Other noteworthy AL performances were rookies Eloy Jiménez (.429, 6 R, 12 H, 6 XBH) and Yóan Moncada (.462, 12 H, 6 XBH, 5 RBI) of the Chicago White Sox; outfielder Yasiel Puig (.500, 12 H, 3 2B, 7 RBI) of the Cleveland Indians; starting pitcher Marco Gonzales (1-1, 1.29 ERA, 14.0 IP, 8 SO) of the Seattle Mariners; designated hitter Nelson Cruz, who clubbed his 400th career home run yesterday (.375, 9 R, 3 HR, 9 RBI), and infielder Miguel Sanó (.333, 6 R, 4 HR, 11 RBI) of the Minnesota Twins; rookie infielder Cavan Biggio (.407, 7 R, 5 XBH, 8 RBI) of the Toronto Blue Jays; All-Star starter Justin Verlander (2-0, 1.64 ERA, 13 SO, 4 BB) of the Houston Astros; and relief pitcher Luke Bard (2-0, 0.00 ERA, 8 SO, 0 BB, 0 H) of the Los Angeles Angels.

Mancini’s teammate, outfielder Austin Hays of the Baltimore Orioles, earned his first career Play of the Week honor, and the second for the Orioles this season, following his teammate Anthony Santander (June 8th). With one out in the top of the fourth inning in Thursday night’s home tilt against the Toronto Blue Jays, Hays ranged back to deep right-center field before leaping at the wall and robbing Vladimir Guerrero Jr. of a home run. Additional Play of the Week candidates included Manuel Margot’s home run-robbing catch at Petco Park; David Fletcher’s diving stop up the middle and glove-flip to Andrelton Simmons to start a double play; Brandon Dixon’s diving catch in foul territory; José Abreu’s catch in foul territory before falling into the netting; and Austin’s other impressive play last week in which he charged in from center field before making a fully-extended diving catch on a shallow fly ball.
