Cubs roster moves for May 7
CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today placed outfielder Ian Happ on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to May 4) with a left rib contusion, selected outfielder Nick Martini from Triple-A Iowa, designated left-handed pitcher Kyle Ryan for assignment and recalled right-handed pitcher Jason Adam from Iowa.
Both Martini, who will wear uniform number 62, and Adam are available for today’s 1:20 p.m. CT game against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Wrigley Field.
Martini, 30, has appeared in 61 major league games with Oakland (2018-19) and San Diego (2019), hitting .269 (66-for-245) with 13 doubles, four triples, two home runs and 26 RBI in 87 games. The left-handed hitter owns a .372 on-base percentage and has appeared in 73 games in left field, two in center field and one in right field.
A native of Crystal Lake, Ill., Martini signed a minor league contract with the Cubs in January of this year after spending the 2020 campaign at the Phillies Alternate Training Site.
Martini’s most extensive major league action came in 2019 when he appeared in 32 games between the Athletics and Padres, hitting .226 with four doubles, a triple, a home run and 17 RBI to go along with 14 walks. In his debut 2018 season, Martini batted .296 (45-for-153) with 26 runs, nine doubles, three triples, one homer and 19 RBI in 55 games spanning four stints with Oakland.
Originally selected by St. Louis in the seventh round of the 2011 draft, Martini owns a .271 average (884-for-3,261) with 164 doubles, 28 triples, 45 home runs and 405 RBI in 927 career minor league games. The left-handed hitter has a .367 on-base percentage and has stolen 64 bases in minor league play while seeing time in center field (297 games), right field (279 games), left field (233 games) and first base (51).
Adam, 29, has no record and a 9.45 ERA (7 ER/6.2 IP) in eight outings for Chicago this season, walking six and striking out 10. He allowed one run in 5.2 innings in his first six relief appearances before surrendering six runs in 1.0 inning in his final two outings, April 22-25, before he was optioned, April 26.
Adam owns a 5-4 record with eight holds and a 4.96 ERA (41 ER/74.1 IP) in 75 career relief appearances with the Royals (2018), Blue Jays (2019) and Cubs (2020-21). He has struck out 86 batters, good for an average of 10.4 strikeouts per 9.0 innings, with 39 walks and a 1.35 WHIP. He appeared in a career-high 23 games for Toronto in 2019, going 3-0 with a 2.91 ERA (7 ER/21.2 IP).
Happ, 26, is hitting .167 (14-for-84) with a double, two home runs and four RBI in 26 games this season. His 15 walks are tied for second on the club and have contributed to a .307 on-base percentage.
Ryan, 29, has a 3.38 ERA (1 ER/2.2 IP) in three outings for Chicago this season. In all or part of the last three seasons with Chicago, Ryan is 5-2 with a 3.86 ERA (34 ER/79.1 IP) with one save and 18 holds in 94 relief appearances.
