Former Rangers president Mike Stone passes away at age of 80 

Arlington, Texas — Former Texas Rangers President Mike Stone passed away suddenly on Friday, October 25 at his home in Ajijic, Mexico at the age of 80.

Mr. Stone served as Team President of the Rangers from 1983-90. During his tenure, the Rangers drew over two million fans for the first time in franchise history in both 1989 and 1990. Mr. Stone appointed Tom Grieve as the team’s General Manager in September 1984 and was instrumental in the Rangers’ signing of free agent pitcher Nolan Ryan in December 1988.

Following his tenure with the Rangers, Mr. Stone served as Commissioner of the independent Northern Baseball League from 2002-06 and was a Professor in the Sports Management program at Southern Methodist University in Dallas from 2010-17.

A celebration of Mr. Stone’s life is expected to be held on Sunday, December 8 in Fort Worth, Texas with more details to follow.
