Giants and Red Sox Complete Trade

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The San Francisco Giants and Boston Red Sox completed a trade today with IF Marcelo Mayer joining the Giants in exchange for LHP Erik Miller and minor league OF Carlos Gutierrez.

Mayer, 23, was batting .220 (45x205) with 19 runs, 10 doubles, three home runs, 22 RBI and a .594 OPS in 70 games for Boston this season. He’s been on the 10-day Injured List since June 26 (bone stress reaction to the left ulna).

The Chula Vista, CA, native was a top 15 overall prospect per MLB.com in 2025 (No. 12), 2024 (No. 15), 2023 (No. 9) and 2022 (No. 14). The fourth overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft, Mayer was named to the Futures Game in both 2023 and 2024. In 114 career MLB games with Boston, Mayer is a .223 hitter with 39 runs, 18 doubles, a triple, seven home runs, 32 RBI and a .624 OPS.

Miller was 2-0 with a 2.76 ERA (10er, 32.2ip), four saves, 45 strikeouts and a 1.38 WHIP in 38 games for the Giants this season. In three MLB seasons (2024-2026), all with the Giants, Miller was 10-6 with a 3.05 ERA and 154 strikeouts in 147 games.

Gutierrez was batting .271 (81x299) with 65 runs, 18 doubles, three triples, nine home runs, 45 RBI, 26 stolen bases and an .826 OPS in 83 games for High-A Eugene this season.
