D-backs’ Gub’nuh Greg Schulte Approaches Final Games As Incredible 26-Year Career with the Team Culminates
Greg Schulte, the beloved radio voice of the D-backs for 26 seasons, is announcing his final regular season games September 29-October 1 as his retirement nears at the end of the 2023 season. Schulte joined the Arizona Diamondbacks organization in the 1998 inaugural season and has served as the D-backs’ Radio Play-by-Play Announcer for the past 26 years.
Schulte’s career will be celebrated on Arizona Sports 98.7 with a two-hour special on Wednesday, September 27 from 5-7 p.m., hosted by Dave Burns. In addition to 98.7 FM, the special can also be heard on arizonasports.com and the Arizona Sports app.
The D-backs will celebrate Schulte with a special pregame ceremony on Friday, September 29, including a gift presentation and throwing out the ceremonial first pitch.
Some of Schulte’s career highlights include:
- Calling nearly 4,000 regular-season and postseason games on radio and TV during his 26 seasons.
- Delivering the call of Luis Gonzalez’s walk-off, ninth-inning single to win Game 7 of 2001 World Series over the New York Yankees.
- Behind the mic for many of Randy Johnson’s historic achievements, including his perfect game on May 18, 2004 @ Braves, his 20-strikeout game, his 3,000th and 4,000th strikeout games and more.
- In addition to Johnson’s perfect game, has called four no-hitters, two for his team and two by opposing pitchers: D-backs’ Edwin Jackson on June 25, 2010 @ Rays and Tyler Gilbert on August 14, 2021 vs. Padres; Cardinals’ Jose Jimenez on June 25, 1999 @ D-backs; and Marlins’ Anibal Sanchez on Sept. 6, 2006 vs. D-backs.
- Calling his 3,000th D-backs game on April 19, 2017.
- In recognition of his 2,000th D-backs’ broadcast, the organization honored Schulte by distributing a bobblehead in his likeness to the first 15,000 fans on July 10, 2010 vs. Marlins.
- His unique homerun call of “deep drive…warning track…wall…you can touch ‘em all” is synonymous with D-backs radio broadcasts.
- From 1998-99, Schulte and Bob Brenly partnered for 3 innings nightly on television.
- His nickname “the Gub’nuh” was bestowed upon him by Brenly and Thom Brennaman.
- Part of the Phoenix broadcast scene since 1979.
Schulte grew up in Silvis, Ill., population 3,000, a part of the Quad-Cities. He and his wife, Nancy, reside in the Valley and have two children, Scott and Stephanie.
