Miami Marlins acquire Jesus Sanchez, Ryne Stanek from Rays
MIAMI – The Miami Marlins today acquired outfielder Jesus Sanchez and right-handed pitcher Ryne Stanek from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for right-handed pitchers Nick Anderson and Trevor Richards.
Sanchez, 21, is rated by MLB Pipeline as Tampa Bay’s No. 4 prospect, No. 42 on its Top 100 list, and No. 10 among outfielders – one spot behind Miami’s top pick in the 2019 Draft, JJ Bleday. Sanchez entered 2019 as a consensus Top 100 prospect by MLB Pipeline (#70), Baseball America (#62), Baseball Prospectus (#32), ESPN (#71), and FanGraphs (#54).
An International signing by the Rays in 2014 out of the Dominican Republic, Sanchez is batting .263 (92x350) in 96 games between Double-A Montgomery (78 games) and Triple-A Durham this season, with 13 doubles, two triples, nine home runs, 54 RBI, and five steals. He is a .298 hitter in 447 career Minor League games, with 97 doubles, 23 triples, 46 homers, 295 RBI, and 29 steals.
Sanchez, who is 6-foot-3, 230 pounds, and bats left-handed, has earned five Midseason or Postseason All-Star nods over the last four seasons, including Midseason honors with Montgomery in the Southern League this year. He made his state-side debut in 2016 and batted .329 between two stops at Rookie levels, and then graduated to the Midwest League in 2017 and finished second in the batting title race at .305, with 15 homers. In 2018 he finished fourth in the Florida State League batting race at .301 and was selected to the World Team at the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game.
Stanek, 28, has posted a 3.40 ERA (55.2 ip/21 er) in 41 appearances (27 starts) primarily as an opener for the Rays this year. He has struck out 61 batters in that time (9.86 per 9.0 innings), and held opponents to a .214 batting average.
The St. Louis, Missouri native has a 3.55 ERA in 121 career appearances (56 starts) over the last three seasons for the Rays, with 171 strikeouts (10.84 per 9.0) and a .220 average against. He was the 29th overall pick in the 2013 First-Year Player Draft by the Rays out of the University of Arkansas.
