Petco Park earns SAFETY Act designation

SAN DIEGO -- On Tuesday, August 18th, the San Diego Padres and Petco Park were named recipients of a Support Anti-Terrorism by Fostering Effective Technologies (SAFETY) Act designation by the United States Department of Homeland Security. The SAFETY Act, enacted by Congress in 2002, serves as one of the highest levels of accreditation offered by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and promotes the development and deployment of effective anti-terrorism measures including technologies, services, and personnel trainings. The designation is also a reflection of the club’s continued commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all Petco Park guests for games, concerts and special events held in and around the ballpark.

“With various events held throughout the year at Petco Park, we take pride in ensuring that our guests feel safe and comfortable while inside of our ballpark,” said Mark Guglielmo, Padres Senior Vice President of Ballpark Operations/General Manager Petco Park. “To be able to achieve this sort of designation, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has high standards and rigorous requirements that must be met. We are honored and appreciative that they have recognized our ongoing efforts to maintain the safest environment possible and thank all of the individuals, law enforcement agencies and emergency service personnel that helped make this possible.”

In order to achieve the SAFETY Act designation, the club refined and developed a comprehensive Petco Park security program consisting of physical and electronic anti-terrorism security measures, tools, policies and procedures, and properly trained personnel. These protocols were designed to detect, deter, prevent, respond to, and mitigate acts of terrorism against Petco Park and any guest, visitors, staff or employees.

Aside from serving as the home of the Padres, Petco Park has also hosted myriad non-baseball events throughout its 16-year history showcasing the venue’s versatility. Petco Park has also hosted baseball on a global scale as the site of the semi-finals and final for the inaugural 2006 World Baseball Classic and host of second-round games for the 2009 and 2017 editions of the WBC, as well as the 2016 MLB All-Star Game.
