Phillies hire Mattingly as director of player development
The Phillies have hired Preston Mattingly as the organization’s director of player development, President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski announced today.
Prior to joining the Phillies, Mattingly spent five seasons (2017-21) with the San Diego Padres, the past year as coordinator of major league advance scouting and game planning after serving as manager of scouting for three years. In his role with the Padres, he headed up information distribution to the pitchers, working with both the research and development department and the coaching staff.
“Preston has a tremendous background for this position,” said Dombrowski. “He has the ability to combine and use the necessary analytical skills blended with his baseball knowledge, and he possesses leadership capabilities that are apparent very quickly. He also has a total love of the game that will help him develop our players with a winning attitude. Our committee did a thorough search of both internal and external candidates the past few weeks and we could not be happier that Preston is joining our organization.”
Mattingly, 34, was a first-round selection (31st overall) by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2006 MLB Draft. He subsequently spent six seasons playing in their minor league system as an infielder and outfielder. Following his playing time, Mattingly enrolled at Lamar University in Texas, where he served as captain of their NCAA Division I basketball team. He graduated from Lamar in 2016. His father, Don Mattingly, played 14 years in the major leagues for the New York Yankees and has spent the past 11 seasons as manager of the Dodgers (2011-15) and Miami Marlins (2016-present).
