Phillies recall Marte, option Sánchez

Prior to today’s game, the Phillies recalled right-handed pitcher Yunior Marte from triple-A Lehigh Valley. To make room for Marte on the 26-man roster, left-handed pitcher Cristopher Sánchez was optioned to Lehigh Valley following yesterday’s game.

Marte, 28, made the Phillies Opening Day roster and threw 1.0 inning across two appearances during the first week of the season. He most recently joined the club as the additional player for Tuesday’s doubleheader at Chicago White Sox.

Marte was originally signed by the Kansas City Royals as an amateur free agent on July 19, 2012 and was acquired from the San Francisco Giants by the Phillies for left-handed pitcher Erik Miller on Jan. 8, 2023.

Sánchez, 26, made his first start of the season yesterday vs Colorado Rockies after being reinstated from the 15-day injured list. He allowed three runs on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts through 4.1 innings of work.

Originally signed by the Tampa Bay Rays as an amateur free agent on July 15, 2013, Sánchez was acquired by the Phillies for infielder Curtis Mead on Nov. 20, 2019.
