Pirates sign left-hander José Quintana

The Pittsburgh Pirates today announced the signing of free agent left-handed pitcher José Quintana to a one-year contract for the 2022 season. The announcement was made by General Manager Ben Cherington.

The 32-year-old Quintana spent a majority of the 2021 season with the Angels and finished the season making five relief appearances with the Giants. Overall, he appeared in 29 games (10 starts) and struck out 85 batters in 63.0 innings of work (a career-high 12.1 strikeouts/per 9.0ip).

“José brings a veteran presence and, as a lefthander, some balance to our starting rotation,” said Cherington. “Only one year removed from an impressive run of durability and success, José demonstrated a clear desire and commitment to improve while pitching in winter ball earlier this month. He is a strong competitor on the mound who also brings with him a terrific reputation as a teammate.”

Quintana most recently pitched with Aguilas in the Dominican Republic Winter League, where he posted a 3.00 ERA (9.0ip/3er) and six strikeouts in two starts.

A 2016 American League All-Star while pitching with the White Sox, Quintana has produced an 83-80 record, 3.84 ERA and 1,395 strikeouts in 1,558.0 innings of work in his big league career.

Quintana, a native of Colombia, has made 30 or more starts seven times during his 10-year Major League career. He won a career-high 13 games three times; with the White Sox in 2016 and with the Cubs in 2018-19.

To make room on the 40-man roster for Quintana, left-handed pitcher Steven Brault has been designated for assignment.
