Academy notebook : Rangers to host Back to School event at Academy tomorrow

Families will have the opportunity to gear up for the new school year at the Texas Rangers MLB Youth Academy at Mercy Street Sports Complex, Presented by Toyota tomorrow, Friday, August 16 at a Back to School Distribution.

Presented by Capital One Bank, The Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation, the Buckner Foundation, and Mercy Street, the Back to School Distribution will feature approximately 200 backpacks to be given away to students ages 7 through 12 whose families registered in advance for the event.

Former Texas Rangers outfielder Justin Ruggiano and Rangers Captain are also scheduled to appear.

Activities will take place in the classrooms inside the Globe Life Field Training Center at the Academy from 12:00-2:00 p.m.

Joey Gallo’s Academy Athletes of the Month

August winners of the Joey Gallo Academy Athletes of the Month award, Dylan Ha and Jocelyn Flores, will be honored on the field at Globe Life Park in Arlington prior to the game tomorrow, Friday, August 16.

Ha played on the 11U Academy team that placed second at the 11U Rangers Youth Ballpark tournament on July 27. The Dallas native is 11 years old and has participated in summer programming at the Academy.

Flores, also 11 years old, has been a regular at softball programming this summer at the Academy. She attends St. Mary of Carmel School.

Each month from May through August, Academy coaches selected one female 12U participant and one male 12U participant who stood out, demonstrating great sportsmanship and character. The Joey Gallo Academy Athletes of the Month meet Gallo during batting practice and receive a Joey Gallo Academy Athlete t-shirt and an autographed baseball.

Softball Tourney Champs

A team of softball players from the Rangers Academy RBI league represented the Academy in the Mercy Street Sports 16U Softball Tournament on Saturday, August 10 and took home the championship.

Ximena Zamarron (2022, Hillcrest) provided the walkoff base hit in the championship contest.

Summer Camps

Session B of the Academy’s Summer Training Program wraps up tomorrow, Friday, August 16. Approximately 460 athletes have participated in summer activities.

Fall programming begins September 16 and runs through November 21. There will be no programming October 14-18 or October 31.

Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:30-8:30 p.m. will feature activities for 18U athletes. Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30-8:30 p.m. will be designed for 12U athletes. Additionally, the weight room will be available to 18U athletes from 4:30-6:30 p.m. and Mondays and 5:00-8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
