Red Sox Announce Roster Moves

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today announced the following roster moves:

Verdugo, 27, has played in 71 of the Red Sox’ 75 games this season, batting .303 (86-for-284) with an .842 OPS and 51 runs scored. The left-handed hitter ranks among American League leaders in hits (T-2nd), batting average (5th), runs scored (T-3rd), doubles (2nd, 24), triples (T-1st, four), and extra-base hits (7th, 33). Acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers in February 2020, Verdugo has hit .289 (596-for-2,065) in 580 career games with Los Angeles (2017-19) and Boston (2020-23).

McGuire, 28, was removed from last night’s game against the Minnesota Twins in the top of the sixth inning. In 40 games this season, the left-handed hitter has batted .267 (28-for-105) with 11 runs scored and 11 RBI. Acquired by Boston from the Chicago White Sox in August 2022, McGuire has hit .258 (186-for-721) in 270 career games with the Toronto Blue Jays (2018-21), White Sox (2022), and Red Sox (2022-23).

Walter, 26, is ranked among the Red Sox’ top 10 prospects by MLB.com (No. 7) and Baseball America (No. 8). The left-hander owns a 6.28 ERA (43 ER/61.2 IP) in 13 games (12 starts) for Worcester this season and has posted a 3.90 ERA (105 ER/242.0 IP) with 11.53 strikeouts per 9.0 innings (310 strikeouts) in 62 career minor league outings (37 starts). Selected by Boston in the 26th round of the 2019 First-Year Player Draft, the Delaware native is rated by Baseball America as having the best slider and best control in the organization.

Hamilton, 28, has played in 30 games for Worcester this season, batting .180 (18-for-100) with four doubles, three home runs, and 13 RBI while making 26 starts as the catcher, one at third base, and one as the designated hitter. Signed by the Red Sox as a minor league free agent in January, the right-handed hitter batted .353 (6-for-17) with two doubles and one home run in 15 Grapefruit League games this year. He was originally selected by the Twins in the 23rd round of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft and appeared in 22 games for Minnesota in 2022, his only MLB experience, going 1-for-18 with one home run.

Chang, 27, was placed on the 15-Day Injured List on April 25 with a left hamate fracture. The right-handed hitter has played in 17 games with the Red Sox this season, making 11 starts at shortstop and two at second base. He has played in 213 Major League games, third most among players born in Taiwan behind Wei-Yin Chen (219) and Hung-Chih Kuo (218).
